Heartbeat Episode 14 Recap

Heartbeat episode 14 starts with Man-hwi taunting Woo-hyeol and Do-sik making his way to fetch him. When there is a knock on Man-hwi’s door, and Woo-hyeol’s friends make an entry to rescue their friend. A fight ensues between them, during which Rose runs off to fetch Woo-hyeol and Dong-seop and Sang-hae fight Man-hwi off. Thanks to them, they are able to rescue Dong-il as well. Just as Man-hwi is almost about to finish his two friends off, Woo-hyeol throws a sucker punch and saves his friends.

Realising that he is outnumbered, Man-hwi makes a run for it and Dong-il and Woo-hyeol talk to each other for the first time as the latter rushes him off to meet his daughter. At Shaded Oasis, Dong-il finally comes face to face with In-hae, who looks shocked and confused at the sudden turn of events. He apologises to her for disappearing for so long but In-hae looks extremely angry and refuses to listen to her father’s words and mentions that it would’ve been better if he remained missing.

He immediately goes to scream at Woo-hyeol for bringing her father back and he, too, gives her some generic unsolicited advice so that she can forgive her father without telling her the truth of what they both have been through. This obviously makes her angry and she refuses to forgive him, creating an unnecessary misunderstanding. Meanwhile, Do-sik discovers Man-hwi’s secret blood cellar and looks quite shocked as well.

Back at home, Do-sik advises Man-hwi to be very careful with his next steps because Woo-hyeol’s blood is the only thing that is important.

The next morning, Dong-il discusses what happened with all those years ago and how Man-hwi abducted him while In-hae secretly listens in. Overcome with emotions after overhearing her father’s plight, In-hae can only sob at their shared misfortune. Elsewhere, Hae-won creates another plan to destroy In-hae while Do-sik can’t help but second-guess Man-hwi’s intentions and is later shocked to learn about Hae-won’s pettiness about the guest house.

As In-hae sits in her room with conflicting emotions about her father’s return, Dong-il provides a heartfelt apology to his daughter, which is enough to melt her and she finally expresses how scared she has been all these years after being left alone without him and the two of them share a warm hug. Meanwhile, Dong-sik tries to make Hae-won see reason about withdrawing her investment, but she doubles down on her plan and threatens to withdraw her other investments as well. Her behaviour makes him take a pause.

Back at the mansion, after making things ok with her father, In-hae thanks Woo-hyeol and the two share a warm moment together. As a gesture of thanks, In-hae proposes to move the date of “Blood Day” up, which Woo-hyeol refsues to do. He gives her the excuse of protecting her for the delay and, unaware of the peril to his life, In-hae happily agrees. That night, during dinner conversation, Dong-il is left concerned about In-hae’s relationship with Woo-hyeol while Do-sik and Man-hwi meet each other to discuss further plans.

The next morning, In-hae gets a letter from the court and Woo-hyeol and the others catch her red-handed – it’s the court’s order to make the payment to Hae-won and the news leaves Woo-hyeol concerned. He reaches out to Hae-won and meets her in a bid to convince her to let go of the mansion but she refuses to budge on her decision. Meanwhile, Sang-hae asks Dong-il whether he knows anything about the gold in the basement; unfortunately, it looks this is this the first time he is hearing about this!

In the meantime, after unsuccesfully meeting with a lawyer, In-hae gets a call from Dong-il and the two meet at a coffee shop. It turns out that Do-sik made the difficult decision to pay back In-hae’s investment, which Hae-won isn’t pleased about and declares war on him as well. That night, while thinking about everything that happened with Hae-won, Woo-hyeol collapses once more and In-hae rushes to his side to help him. She sees the marks on Woo-hyeol’s arms but before she can get an answer, he collapses.

Later, In-hae asks Sang-hae and Dong-seop why this keeps happening to Woo-hyeol and whether she is the reason for it or not. Although they refuse to answer, she decides that they need to get the deed done sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Hae-won makes a surprise visit to In-hae’s neighbourhood with news about buying it and Do-sik receives his special knife made of hawthorn wood and silver.

Heartbeat Episode 14 Review

I feel like there should be more to characters than just naked jealousy – a person cannot be defined by how vindictive they are and Hae-won’s refusal to be anything but a petty a-hole and digging her heels in every chance she gets is starting to get a little old. Sure, youngsters doing this is expected, but not a mature adult wit a lot of money.

And I know, you might say that some rich people are exactly like this; which I agree with. But my problem is that we know nothing about Hae-won other than she is obsessed with Woo-hyeol and will go to any lengths, including making him a slave, in order to get what she wants. It gets tiring very quickly.

Other than that, In-hae’s tearful reuniun with her father was quite emotional and kudos to Won Ji-an for a believable performance. I think the time that we took to understand her feelings about this and then show us the reunion. I wonder whether she would be expected to forgive her father had she not overheard his conversation with Woo-hyeol. I don’t understand this weird writing and character motivations; like, if In-hae doesn’t tell Woo-hyeol about what Hae-won is up to, was he never going to find out or something? I don’t get it. It’s a very old trope in dramas wherein people just don’t tell their significant others about life-changing stuff. Like, will the secret never come out or soemthing?

Anyway, apart from baffling choices made by some of the characters, it’s been an entertaining episode. One which would’ve been much better had everyone acted like adults. I mean, Do-sik is also a jilter lover but he isn’t out for blood. Ok, he is, but that’s a centuries-old curse thing. At least he’s not being petty with In-hae, you know?

Heartbeat is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in select regions and on KBS2 in Korea.
