Extraction Part 2 Review: Plot Summary
In the first part, black ops mercenary Tyler Rake had to extract an Indian drug lord’s son, Ovi Mahajan. The mission was tough, but he successfully saved the kid in the end. However, Tyler is pushed into the clutches of death, with a small tease that he will be back. Well, despite so many physical wounds and damage, Tyler is back and taking retirement from work.
It’s a very short retirement, as Idris Elba assigns him a crucial mission. Tyler has to extract a gangster’s family (a mother and her two kids) held at a prison in Georgia. Tyler accepts the mission without hesitation, leaving Nick Kahn and us perplexed. After all, he also has emotional wounds due to the passing of his child. So will Tyler succeed in carrying out yet another big mission?
Extraction 2 Review: Discussion
When Extraction was released in 2020, it kept me hooked with its power-packed action sequences, performances, and bad guys. The story was decent, yet it left me feeling satisfied in the end. In the sequel, Tyler Rake’s dedication and bravery to carry out a mission, even if it costs his own life, remain consistent. Another element that impressed me were the action sequences.
Like in the first part, director Sam Hargrave added a prolonged action sequence. Cars are replaced by weapons, especially guns. It happens in the first hour, when Tyler manages the rescue operation alone. Initially, you are thrilled with what’s happening. The brutality on screen reminded me of some gruesome fight sequences in Game of Thrones. The choreography of the fight sequence is intense and spectacular.
In the second hour, along with the mission, the story also sheds some light on Tyler’s family background. You get an answer about his need to save kids, even if he gets defeated in the process. The makers have cleverly linked his personal and professional lives in the new movie. But apart from that, the story is predictable. You always know how these stories end.
Actor Tornike Gogrichiani plays the villain in the new chapter. He is ruthless and wants revenge for a loved one’s murder. But the face-off and fight sequence (another extended one) doesn’t pay off well. It happens because Tyler’s emotional attachment to the mission is not as deep as before. It’s sad, considering this is where the makers should’ve brought in all the force to make it one heck of a fight scene.
Chris Hemsworth always excels in action movies. He’s an amazing actor with a physique that makes it believable that he can take down several bad guys. Idris Elba’s character owns the screen for whatever limited time he appears. He adds more curiosity to the franchise in the end. The rest of the cast plays their parts well. But unlike the first part, none are memorable.
Extraction 2 Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, Sam Hargrave’s latest action thriller is average. Chris Hemsworth is brought back to life to fight an underwhelming mission. In the last 30 minutes, the narrative becomes predictable and bland. The enemy isn’t threatening. The thrill of watching Tyler fight to save Ovi on that bridge in Part 1 in the last few minutes is missing from the sequel.
The movie will stream on Netflix from June 16.
