Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 5-6 Review: The Mayhem of Burgue

Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 5 and 6 finds Vignette in a tough spot as she withstands her human trial after the revolt of the Fae community. The episode also features a terrifying mythical creature declaring war against oppression. Moreover, the episodes are titled Reckoning and Original Sins respectively and have an average runtime of 50+ minutes.

Notably, the fantasy drama series is centred around an oppressive tussle between humans and Fae and is created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham. Moreover, the complete cast of the series includes Simon McBurney, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Andrew Gower, Karla Crome, Arty Froushan, Indira Varma, and Jared Harris.

The official synopsis of the series reads as

LOVE. MURDER. CONSPIRACY. REVOLUTION. WHEN MYSTERIOUS KILLINGS INFLAME TENSIONS BETWEEN THE FAEFOLK AND THEIR HUMAN OPPRESSORS, EACH DENIZEN OF CARNIVAL ROW MUST CHOOSE WHO THEY ARE AND HOW TO ACT.

Carnival Row Episode 5 was a turning point in the series, with the narrative taking an unexpected turn towards the mystical and gory elements. Moreover, the events that occurred in the recent instalments were truly stellar and awe-worthy, which shifted the momentum in the favor of the Fae.

The fifth episode saw the unexpected arrest of Vignette for her intrusion, followed by a gruesome sentence of death by sawing. The layer of tension in the episode was gripping and continuous, as the fae community was thrown into chaos and desperation, searching for a way to save Vignette. Furthermore, the episode also balanced the emotional turmoil of the characters, while looking for a way out.

The trajectory of the episode was even more intense, as Rycroft teamed up with a fellow fae to rescue Vignette. The action sequences in the episode took it up a notch and delivered some gut-wrenching (literally) scenarios. Notably, what Rycroft discovered at the end of the episode, was an unexpected and horrifying creature, completely different from anything the detective faced before.

The climax of these episodes was gory, but it was also exhilarating to watch. The violence was not needless but a direct depiction of the purpose. Furthermore, the main highlight of the episodes was building up to the final reveal of the mythical creature.

Cara Delevingne is pitch-perfect as Vignette, bringing both strength and vulnerability to her character as she faces the horrors of her impending execution. David Gyasi gives another standout performance as Agreus, traversing through the complexities of his character’s relationships with love and prejudice.
