Bucchigiri Episode 1 Review: A new anime from MAPPA has dropped, and sadly, not many people are talking about it. Hopefully, it will get famous soon as I quite like it. Read ahead to find out more.
Bucchigiri Episode 1 Overview
Bucchigiri?! is a new anime series and an original anime from MAPPA, the studio behind popular shows like Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s set to premiere this January, so it’s just around the corner!
The series is described as a return to the delinquent/Yanki genre of anime, which was popular in the late 90s and early 2000s with shows like Cromartie High School and Great Teacher Onizuka.

Under the direction of Hiroko Utsumi and the story of Taku Kishimoto, the series also consists of the musical composition of Michiru Ōshima, while character designs are by Takahiro Kagami.
The opening theme, “Sesame” by Kroi, sets the tone, and the ending theme will be Love je t’aime (らぶじゅてーむ)” by Mahiru Coda (甲田まひる).
I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

Bucchigiri Episode 1 Review and Recap: A New Transfer Student
This episode starts off as quite confusing. The plot, the characters, and the way they conduct themselves all seem new and interesting and almost reminds you of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

So, the episode starts with Arajin Tomoshibi, an aspiring musician who has recently transferred schools. He clearly has no idea where he is going and is very excited to charm some ladies on his very first day of school. Sadly, he finds himself in the middle of gangs and delinquents, where only the cute Mahoro seems to be the exception.
The story is not just about a bunch of school kids being delinquents, as it also mixes Middle Eastern fantasy elements as well. You get a literal genie out of nowhere willing to do whatever Arajin wants. Apparently, they are connected to Honki people who find a heart that does not flee. In olden times, these people threw away their swords or helmets and armed only with Honki, they would give it all to rise to the top.
But that is not all there is also a strong sense of friendship going on between Arajin and Matakara, a long-lost friend who used to be a weak-looking child. He definitely became way stronger in the times Arajin was absent. I sense a tragic history between them, which might be the reason behind their awkward reunion.
And not just that, we will also see gang rivalries here. This is a situation no one would want to be a part of, but sadly, Arajin becomes a victim of it.

His school is essentially run by two gangs. The Minato Kai and Siguma Squad, whose members fight often to get the top spot. It is the eccentric leader of Siguma Squad, Jin Marito, whose wrath, our hero, incurs right after moving to the school. Now, we will have to see how he will survive the school and try to win the affection of Mahoro at the same time.
Verdict
The anime in the beginning feels a bit all over the place, and in the middle starts to make sense when we get more details. But by the end, I was hooked on the storyline, and now, I am already anticipating the next episode. The animation is, as usual, very good, with very interesting color choices.
All in all, this is a pretty intriguing anime that you should definitely keep on your watchlist this season. At least I will follow this anime and see how things turn out.
