Asteroid City Trailer: Explosive Cast Dons 50s Apparel in Fictional City to Celebrate Outer Space

If you’re a fan of symmetrical framing and the jaw-dropping cinematography, you may not survive the Asteroid City trailer. This film stars Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carrell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan and Jeff Goldblum, alongside other cast members.

Wes Anderson joins the crew as the director and screenplay writer. He also joins the crew as a story contributor along with Roman Coppola. This film is set in the fictional town of Asteroid City circa 1955. It chronicles a single event that changes the course of their desert town and humanity.

The first image from the trailer is that of a man speaking on the phone to his father, who is reluctantly making his way to them to pick up his granddaughters. This happens because the man’s car explodes rhythmically while his daughters stand and watch the scene unfolding before them. Joining them is also their older brother, who seems to have dug his nose into a book, unavailable for any social interaction.

We hear Asteroid City for the first time when the man shares where his car has broken down. The first look through the town shows their obsession with everything outer space related. Doing the name justice, they have centred their entire identity around this singular day when an Arid Plains Meteorite hit Earth. Things are about to go haywire at the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention held on Asteroid Day. A remote explosion somewhere afar sets everyone on edge, but newcomers to the city blur the danger that it presents.

Fortunately for the people living within the city, knowledge about space means knowing their limits, and they have come to know that as Aliens descend upon them. Scientists living within the city have decided to dedicate all their efforts to figuring out who they are and what they have come for. While others see them as a threat, some are more inviting to their end of days. Inhabitants are now paranoid and scared to leave and to continue living here.

Even within the grand scheme of things, there is a family at the centre of it undergoing some loss and some pain but altogether enjoying this experience of escaping their situation, lives and the planet even. The grandfather shares how losing a loved one made him impart faith to everyone he loves in his life, the man’s included. Characters share how outer space feels more like home, while others expect them to be comfortable in Earth’s atmosphere.

Strange kids and normal people are overrated in any project involving this auteur director. With a sparky song playing in the background and a small insight into the town, fans have already set their eye on this movie. Once again, the classic Wes Anderson zoom-ins, the well-timed dialogues, and the specific pauses make it extremely clear what the film will be like. They are missing Bill Murray throughout all of this but Tom Hanks seems to be a great stand-in blending into the role extremely well.

While there are obviously some veterans from the Wes Anderson universe in this film. The newcomers like Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Maya Hawke and many others are looking well-fleshed in this extension of the filmmaker’s universe.
