Un-Ex You Review: When boss babe Zuri finds out that time is running out for her to have a biological child, she desperately tries to get back in touch with her ex-boyfriend Andy to have a baby with. However, unbeknownst to her, Andy suffers from amnesia, and this mission is going to be more complicated than she could’ve imagined.

Un-Ex You Review

Films that make a joke out of women’s fertility issues and make the central female protagonist say things like, they will get pregnant within a few months without a sperm bank, make me lose faith in humanity. Un-Ex You, bringing forth the desperation of a woman whose biological clock is ticking down (a term that I absolutely hate), is something of that sort – it made my blood boil and made me cringe all at the same time.

This is a comedy where nothing makes sense. The very long intro sequence showcases Zuri being passed around from family to family for one reason or another, and her eventually becoming a business boss babe. It’s loud and obnoxious and makes you immediately wary of the content, and for good reason. We then see a very dramatic doctor break the news that Zuri must get impregnanted immediately or forever lose hope of having a biological child, followed by images of penises because, obviously, we are all 12 years old and male genitalia is hilarious.

We then go on a convoluted journey of Zuri tracking down her ex-boyfriend Andy, who suffers from amnesia, and trying to creepily convince him to get her pregnant. The goal isn’t really to have a relationship with him; she just really wants to have his (specific) children. We don’t know why she’s obsessed with his sperm, but she somehow is. It doesn’t seem like she particularly likes him enough to be tied to him for eternity, thanks to a child, and we don’t understand why a sperm bank isn’t an option (which would be much easier instead of whatever journey this seems to be).

However, my problem with Un-Ex You, a term that is repeated in this film far too many times than I would like, is that its idea of pregnancy and motherhood is so shallow that it will leave you incensed. It doesn’t help that the film doesn’t answer important questions, and whether it’s truly ethical to scam your way to someone’s loins (sorry) if they can’t really remember who you are or your shared history. Seems like a disproportionate power dynamic.

One can say that it’s not that deep and that it’s a comedy, so just laugh. But you can’t laugh at, or with, something that doesn’t make sense. I still don’t, after 97 minutes, understand why it has to be Andy who can be her baby’s father. They don’t seem to have broken up on amicable terms, something that they can’t resolve because, again, amnesia. It feels unfair and odd, and there are easier solutions to this problem. The comedy is too over-the-top and dramatic for no possible reason. It’s like, if they scream loud enough, without rhyme or reason, we will start laughing. We, unfortunately, won’t.

Un-Ex You is an over-the-top comedy that is not funny and whose storyline doesn’t showcase the weight of the issue that it wants to make a joke out of. The film wants us to believe that the answer to Zuri’s problems is Andy impregnating her without rhyme or reason, but an easier solution is the sperm bank, where there is no emotional baggage and an almost guaranteed baby. The film doesn’t tell us why the characters make these decisions, and that is its biggest flaw.
