hey hey MV Review: TWS Summer Track Celebrates Friendship and Is Irresistibly Catchy

Just five months after their debut, TWS is back with the Hey Hey MV, a part of their second mini-album SUMMER BEAT! set to release on the 24th. This group consists of six members: Shinyu, Dohoon, Youngjae, Hanjin, Jihoon, and Kyungmin, under Pledis Entertainment. They are the second boy group from this label after SEVENTEEN. The music video is produced by Han Sung-soo, and the creative director is Lee Hyun-ju.

Initially introduced as SEVENTEEN Junior, the group TWS caught my attention upon their debut. However, it wasn’t until I stumbled upon their track PLOT TWIST that my fascination truly took hold, leading me to swiftly fall in love with both the group and the song itself, a steadfast fixture in my playlist ever since. Their promising debut album only heightened my anticipation for what was to follow. With the release of hey! hey!, my expectations soared even higher, given their self-imposed standards. Thankfully, upon listening, I can confidently affirm that they have yet to disappoint.

Now, onto the review: the music video offers a refreshing take, perfectly encapsulating the essence of boyhood pop that defines the group. It opens with the familiar sound of a school bell, instantly transporting viewers to a scene reminiscent of our own school days. As the members gather on the basketball court, the music kicks in, evoking memories of carefree moments spent with friends.

Clocking in at over 3 minutes, the song is a welcome departure from the current trend of shorter tracks. It boasts two full verses, a captivating chorus, a dynamic pre-chorus, and a thrilling 20-second bridge—a rarity in an era dominated by brief compositions. The instrumental arrangements and falsettos are undeniably addictive, drawing listeners in with each repetition of the infectious “we don’t stop.” While initially appearing repetitive, subsequent listens reveal its subtle nuances, blending seamlessly into the overall composition.

The song portrays a sense of unity, perseverance, and companionship amidst uncertainty. It begins with a depiction of individuals standing on unstable ground, symbolizing life’s unpredictable nature. Despite coming from diverse backgrounds, they converge with a shared purpose, propelling towards an unknown future. The pre-chorus emphasizes their relentless pursuit fuelled by passion and solidarity, refusing to succumb to challenges.

The chorus embodies the essence of mutual support and connection, urging listeners to join the journey. Through running together, they exchange emotions and experiences, finding solace and joy in each other’s presence. Ultimately, the lyrics express gratitude for the bond forged amidst the chaos, highlighting the profound impact of companionship in navigating life’s complexities.

The MV’s setting is nothing short of picturesque, capturing the beauty of youthful camaraderie amidst scenic backdrops. Scenes of the members frolicking with backpacks in tow exude an authentic teenage vibe, a refreshing departure from the typical glamour shots often found in school-themed MVs. In essence, hey! hey! not only delivers musically but also visually, offering a nostalgic journey into the realm of teenage friendships—a testament to TWS’s unparalleled ability to resonate with its audience on multiple levels.
