The Wrong Paris Review
The Wrong Paris is everything you expect from a typical romcom movie, and not once does it betray your expectations and try to be something different. The film opens with Dawn, the definition of someone who’s not like other girls, and she is undoubtedly special. She is a hard-working small-town woman who is responsible, paying for her grandmother’s hospital bills, etc, but also quirky in her own way. As she has exhausted all the money she kept for her Paris education trip, she desperately needs to find another option before she starts her school in her dream city.

Thankfully, she gets a very good option, which is to appear in a dating show where the appearance fees can be enough to cover her expenses. On top of all this, coincidentally, this dating show also happens to take place in Paris, her target from the very beginning. But tragedy strikes when she finds out that the Paris that she was promised is actually the Texas Paris, which is literally not far from her own home. Thus, she devises a plan to get eliminated as soon as possible, which becomes more difficult than anything.
You see, a few days before Dawn joins the reality show, she meets a rather dashing man, Trey, with whom immediate sparks fly. The chemistry is there, and they pretty much fall for each other’s charms right away. However, now Dawn finds out that her love target in the show is the same man she fell for, changing things a bit. From here on, the movie goes exactly how you would think it would go. Dawn does everything she can to bow out, but Trey refuses to let go, because after all, where else would he find someone so charming yet so deeply in tune with him?
Well, for those not accustomed to the familiar shades of classic romcoms, The Wrong Paris can come across as a little cringeworthy at times. The film channels the same upbeat and exaggerated themes that early 2000s hits like High School Musical had, but reimagines them in a more grown-up way. The plot feels predictable, almost like a Wattpad fanfiction, but in the end, it all works, because familiar stories still connect.

The main characters themselves do a pretty good job of convincingly showcasing two people in love, and their feelings towards each other pull you in. But the side characters, especially the other girls of the dating show, were not fleshed out properly and were only there to play their role in bringing the main couple together. So, is this something that you have never seen before? No, it is not. It is a very basic and very common love story that Hollywood has churned out many, many times before.
Verdict

All in all, this was a decent romcom movie that works great as a guilty pleasure. It has all the heart-skipping moments and dreamy situations people secretly wish for in real life, even while knowing they aren’t real. If you can look past its heavy reliance on cliches, occasional cringe, and obvious stereotypes, you might just enjoy this movie.
