The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 9 Recap
Hikaru and Yoshiki gain an unexpected ally in Kurebayashi, who steps in to save them from a ghostly attack. Curious about their bond, she directly questions Yoshiki about his relationship with Hikaru. Yoshiki chooses honesty, opening up about everything. Rather than recoiling, Kurebayashi promises to stand by them and even begins probing the mystery of what Hikaru truly is. Her involvement feels deeply personal, as we learn that her own husband once returned from death, an event that left their son scarred. Since then, she has dedicated herself to studying spirits and souls, which makes her determined to lend her support to the troubled pair.
In a quieter moment, Yoshiki creates a small grave for the original Hikaru, offering prayers for his soul. The “new” Hikaru uses this opportunity to ask Yoshiki how much he differs from the one who came before. Yoshiki’s responses reveal both unease and acceptance. When pressed about whether he loved the original Hikaru, Yoshiki refuses to answer directly, but he makes one thing clear: he doesn’t want this Hikaru to change into something more human. He’s ready to accept and protect him exactly as he is.

Their conversation shifts to the threat looming over the village. Hikaru suggests that returning to the mountain might end the string of supernatural misfortunes, but Yoshiki firmly rejects the idea, refusing to let him leave. What follows in the second half of the episode completely flips the tone, delivering a shocking and nerve-racking sequence that raises the stakes higher than ever.
The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 10 Review

The episode begins with Yoshiki completely panicking about the supposed death of Hikaru. He also tries to reattach his head to Hikaru’s body, and when he finally manages to do that, Yoshiki faints. Back at the hospital, Hikaru and Yoshiki get admitted at the same time, and even though Yoshiki wakes up, Hikaru is still unconscious. Later, we see that Tanaka himself has some mysterious goals behind his pursuit of Hikaru.
After that, Hikaru finally wakes up, and Rie asks him why Hikaru feels a lot weaker than he was before. They realise that it was because of the body part that Hikaru gave to Yoshiki. Thankfully, they are quick to revert to their normal selves, but it does not change the fact that they are still in danger. In this episode, we also get to hear a very strange story about the villagers aborting kids to control the population with the help of a mercury-based drug in the past.

Yoshiki researches this entire curse thing very deeply, but still gets confused as to what really happened. Both of them finally go to the shrine that the Indo family worships, and this shrine looks really creepy as it is made up of human heads carved out of wood. After touching them, Hikaru recalls something that makes his head hurt. We finally learn that the villagers had been murdering people in the past and offering their heads to Nonuki-sama.
Verdict

Today’s episode was again pretty confusing and mysterious, but sadly, we are yet to understand anything about the lore of the story. It would be helpful if the creators clarified things, as each passing episode makes it harder to grasp what truly happened in the village.
