The Slumber Party Review: Directed by Veronica Rodriguez and written by Eydie Faye and Jen Malone, the movie follows the life of a group of teenagers waking up to an adventure ahead after a sleepover. The movie’s cast includes Darby Camp, Tituss Burgess, Valentina Herrera, Emmy Liu-Wang, Alex Cooper Cohen, and other actors with a runtime of 1 hour 45 minutes.
The Slumber Party Plot
When three best friends have a sleepover, to celebrate one of the friend’s birthday, things become adventurous. A mysterious party starter, Mr. Mesmer comes and hypnotises the girls so that they live a fearless life.
The Slumber Party Review
As this movie is produced by Disney, it’s no wonder they would give the 2000s touch to it. The art design of the movie is so like the Hannah Montana era, with colourful rooms, teen romances, bright outfits, and best friends on an adventure. The movie has a lot of dialogue, and as an adult, I found it quite annoying.

The young people kept on yapping the whole time, line after line, which showed how the writers focused too much on the narration of the story. Cinematography-wise, it’s not bad nor too good because since it is a teen-friendly movie, nothing eminent is shown here. Just a neighbourhood, with some wild moves and young people running here and there.
There are various aspects in this movie that one should keenly watch out for. Firstly, families. Megan has gay fathers (meaning she’s adopted), Paige lives as a half-baby-sister with her single mother (who is married 3 to 4 times), and Anna, who is stuck between divorced parents. To make things worse, on Anna’s birthday, she hears about her father’s upcoming wedding and her soon-to-be step-sister. Though the young kids have their family issues to handle, they’re not shown depressed or sullen about it.

Yes, they do talk about their wish to be in a proper household, but the three girls are written in a way that it educates young minds to overcome such familial situations. Another aspect is teen romance, of course. In the beginning, we see how Megan stares in awe at Jake, a guy who is a year older than her. These crush stories make the movie wholesome as it takes one to their own teenhood, where similar situations might have happened.

Contrary to the teens in this movie, these days, 14-year-olds are portrayed as party-going teens who are addicted to drugs and sex. So it’s a nice thing that The Slumber Party re-instates how teenage romances can be much cuter than the modern generation’s relationships. Moreover, there aren’t any vulgar dialogues or obscene scenes. Hence this makes the flick worthy enough to be streamed by young people.
While watching this movie, it is quite clear that the plot is heavily influenced by movies like The Hangover. Similar to that, over here, a group of friends are waking up after a sleepover only to realise that they have no memories of what caused them certain disasters. Thankfully, there’s no usage of alcohol substances, and it is because of that, The Slumber Party becomes a fresh movie that can be streamed by people of all ages (I’m tired of movies with too many drugs and parties).
Final Thoughts
Overall, the movie has moral principles to offer to the teenagers. It conveys messages regarding queer life, romantic interests, familial pressures, etc. Additionally, the movie sets an example for teenagers to be brave and face the hazards in front of them. If you’re a parent who is willing to show your children a decent fun-packed movie, then this one is a good choice.
