The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Part 1 Review: Using a Law School Degree and Still Failing Basic Ethics

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Part 1 Review: The series was created by Ted Humphrey, who adapted it from Michael Connelly’s fast-paced, widely-selling books of the same name. It stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, the titular character. Neve Campbell as Maggie McPherson, his first wife, Becki Newton as Lorna, his second wife, Angus Sampson as Cisco, the investigator, Jazz Raycole as Izzy Letts, the famed driver and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine as Detective Griggs.

Some new cast members introduced this season include Lana Parrilla, Yaya DaCosta, Matt Angel, Angélica María and David Clayton Rogers. In this season, the episodes are written by David E. Kelley, Zach Calig, Gladys Rodriguez, Ryan Hoang Williams and Dailyn Rodriguez. It is produced by Robert Lloyd Lewis and Justin Peacock, while David Buckley serves as the composer of the series. There will be five episodes in this part, each about 50 minutes in duration, with the latter five releasing later next month.

– The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Part 1 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

Mickey Haller is back and at it again. We see him go into the deep end from the very beginning. Clearly, the streaming platform is trying to justify splitting the season in two halves because unless they give viewers the incentive to come back, the series kind of runs dry for now. Truly the only exciting thing that happens in the instalment so far has also been revealed in the trailer, and it is the fact that this lawyer is about break every single one of his law book rules to represent the woman he has been seeing.

Once again, this is not to disparage the fact that there is a lot of potential for exploration because the characters are just as distinct and brilliant as we saw them last time. If we weren’t following Mickey all the time, we would see other characters with their own struggles and their own ambitions as they figure out how to rope their friend out of bad situations. I want to give props to the writers for adapting the series in such a brilliant way, exploring the deep depths of every relationship and interaction.

Sometimes, there isn’t plot progression for some of these interactions, and it shows that it was included so we get a deeper understanding of the people we will be following for 10 episodes. The writing is incredibly dramatic and makes everything seem like a high-stakes moment, so these humanising interactions give us a chance to see these characters in a new light. While the case does seem compelling in this season, the last season set up a villain that could have lasted a little longer than it did.

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Part 1 Review: Still 1
A still from the season

It seemed like the conflict set up throughout the last season had no basis in this one. It is entirely possible that the writers bring it back in the second part of The Lincoln Lawyer. It is good that they still have five more episodes to prove the gravity of this situation because if they wanted to up the stakes for the main character this time, they have only successfully made him more infuriating. To be fair, he has always been the straight man who does things his way and gets his way but is still incredibly lovable, AKA every lawyer character we have seen till now. I blame Suits for this trope.

Additionally, since the writing has to rise up to the high-stakes occasion and is bound to the conventions of the trope, it almost falls into the bad writing genre. There are many good things about this series, including but not limited to the acting, the storyline, the arguments and the structure. However, the quality of The Lincoln Lawyer comes down because of this kind of writing. However, there is a way this works out for the creators. There is a desire for nostalgic content from the cable television era. The 22-episode era, with some filler episodes, is what people want.

This show manages to bring back some of that magic but is still expected to follow Netflix’s plot algorithm. Either the pace is too fast or too slow, but fortunately, at least this series manages to keep a steady stream when it comes to the plot progression. This season is definitely a step up in terms of the premise, but it is yet to show any promise. Perhaps the second part will speed up the pace in the most unnatural way.

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Part 1 Review: Final Thoughts

If people enjoyed the first season of the show, they could definitely come back to it. They haven’t changed the base idea of the show and even merged the storylines from the first season to the second. Even though I am bitter about how they handled some of the reconciliation, it was a good way to introduce some of the internal conflicts in the season. It is definitely up to the second part of the season to bring this home satisfyingly.

However, the cliffhanger definitely makes it worth it to come back. Some could say that they set it up in such a way that it was false advertising, but anyways, the curiosity is high enough for me to come back and watch. Leaving the characters the way they are without any kind of resolution would be a real crime here.

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Part 1 is currently streaming on Netflix. Part 2 will arrive on the streaming platform on August 3, 2023.
