Season 2 of The Devil Is A Part-Timer has been a long time coming ever since the series was first released in 2013 and impressed a lot of viewers with its character development and storytelling. The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 2 Review- Surprise!

They say that introducing a baby into any show or long-form media indicates a lack of ideas from the creators and is a sign of a dying series. Plenty of examples can be found through the years about shows that were struggling for content and introduced a baby just when the show was at its lowest point to somehow milk more content out of it. Shows like Friends, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother are just some of the many examples of this happening. There aren’t many examples of this happening in anime, but Arifureta counts, right?

This is only episode 2 of the latest season, and some might deem it too early to make statements like the one I’m going to make right now, but the new season of Maou-sama has lost a few steps as a show ever since the end of season 1. There was a magic in season 1 that made it one of the freshest things on the block and a delight to watch, even if nothing happened in a particular episode. Season 2 feels like extra time has been tacked onto the end of season 1 with not much of a story to tell. It is just season 1 but worse, and a baby is added to the mix.

Not enough has changed in the show to warrant a whole new season of the same story the show was telling before. The addition of a baby has just added more awkwardness on top of the simplistic plot. As you would expect, the latest episode was about figuring out what to do with this new baby that appeared out of nowhere, calling Maou Dad and Emilia Mom. Everyone reacts as you would expect them to, and there is no surprise when Maou reveals his plans of raising the baby as best he can until her origins are discovered. I believe everyone who has watched season 1 can recreate this episode dialogue by dialogue. That’s how predictable it was.

Chiho got some of her flowers in The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 2, as we finally got to do the one cool thing she has been known to do since Season 1- Traditional Archery. That wasn’t all, though. The consequences of someone as young as her roaming around with a guy and his baby were put together surprisingly well and addressed better than you would expect. Her sweet and gentle nature also came through in a big way, as she proved herself to be the best among the group to handle a responsibility this big.

As long as he keeps being this way, I am going to keep complaining. Lucifer is the most condescending and useless character ever seen in a slice-of-life anime. What purpose does he serve? All he does is shamelessly eat away at all the money Maou earns (and Ashia saves) while doing nothing beneficial for the overall plot structure or the group he lives with. He could die a fiery death right now, and the show would easily move on without mentioning him again. If somebody could tell me why he’s in the show, I’d be thankful to them.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 2 was a mediocre offering by a show that feels directionless right now, and that doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon.
