The Better Sister Ending Explained
The main mystery behind the series is understanding who murdered Adam. Although the blame falls on a lot of people, including Nicky and Chloe, it mainly falls on Ethan, Nicky and Adam’s son, who seemingly set up a burglary gone wrong scene that the police see through.
The relationship between the sisters becomes another point of contention throughout the series as Chloe had married Nicky’s husband Adam after they had an affair. Nicky, a recovering addict, was deemed unfit to parent Ethan and lost custody, and Chloe took over Ethan’s care afterwards. Thus, when Nicky returns, it turns out to be a rather tumultuous time in their lives as she is technically Ethan’s legal guardian, which means that Chloe is unable to ask her to leave.

Unveiling the Truth Behind Adam’s Murder
The finale reveals that Nicky is the one who killed Adam. She confesses that Adam had been abusive towards her, Chloe, and Ethan. In a moment of desperation and protection, Nicky uses their father’s knife to kill Adam, leaving her phone in Cleveland with Adam’s mother to establish an alibi.
It is also revealed here that it’s Adam who set Nicky up to lose custody of Ethan. The last time Nicky was looking after Ethan, Adam, unable to take Nicky’s alcoholism, mixed drugs in her lemonade, which caused her to pass out. He then called the police, explaining that baby Ethan almost drowned in the pool due to Nicky, and thus established Nicky as an unfit parent. During this time, Adam was already in an affair with Chloe and, to speed up their relationship, he decided to get rid of Nicky quickly.

Adam has always been abusive, but has hidden it well behind his friendly exterior. He was violent with Chloe when she refused to scale back her work and focus on the home instead. Ethan knew about his father’s violent tendencies, and thus, even though he thought that Chloe had murdered his father, he decided to take her side.
Do the Sisters Reconcile?
The revelation of Nicky’s actions forces both sisters to confront their past and the choices they’ve made. Chloe grapples with the reality of her husband’s abuse and her sister’s drastic measures to protect the family. Despite the betrayal, the sisters find a path to reconciliation, united by their shared trauma and the desire to protect Ethan.
Does Nicky Face Consequences For the Murder?

In court, Chloe establishes that Adam was violent by using Jake Rodríguez, their neighbour and the man she was having an affair with. Due to Jake, Adam and Bill’s shady business dealings, Chloe knew that if she shifted the blame to him, he wouldn’t be able to give away any information since it is highly confidential. And that’s exactly how it plays out. Jake doesn’t give any information, but the blame shifts to him as the jealous lover who decided to murder the abusive husband.
In the end, Jake is murdered by the powerful people he was representing through this law firm, while Bill ends up taking the fall for Adam’s murder and other Gentry-related investigations and is arrested by Matt. It turns out that Chloe had sneakily planted all the evidence around Matt’s office and then given Matt the heads-up about it. Meanwhile, Chloe and Nicky disagree with the former’s tell-all book deal but in the final moments of the show, they make up and agree to work together, proving that they’ve had each other’s backs all along.
