The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 23 Recap
Maomao is now safe, and in this episode, Jinshi takes on a dignified and commanding role. Once he’s sure of Maomao’s evacuation, he immediately sets off in pursuit of those behind the chaos. That’s when Shishou appears armed with a new type of gun that operates without a spark. As he brandishes the weapon, he delivers a strange and unsettling speech, one that raises Jinshi’s doubts and makes him wonder if all of this had been carefully orchestrated from the very start. The suspicion only grows stronger when Shishou, seemingly welcoming death, takes multiple fatal shots while laughing maniacally.

Jinshi then resumes his search for Shenmei and Loulan but ends up at gunpoint when Loulan confronts him and demands he follow her. She leads him to Shenmei and, in a moment of heavy revelation, unveils the truth behind Suirei’s birth. It becomes clear that Shishou had manipulated events to gain control over Shenmei, setting off a tragic chain of events that eventually led to the Shi clan’s ruin.
When Shenmei realises that even her own daughter had betrayed her, she turns the gun on Loulan in a moment of anguish. This scene marks a sharp emotional turn, highlighting just how tangled and painful the situation has become. Despite everything, Loulan makes a devastating yet selfless choice, ensuring that Suirei is spared from suffering.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 24 Review
Today’s episode was hands down the most romance-forward for both Maomao and Jinshi, and I am absolutely livid that the series has come to an end. It begins with Jinshi coming to the room where Maomao and the children were. Here, he has a deep conversation with Maomao about what transpired and what the fate of Loulan is. Weirdly enough, Maomao does not outright ask about why he is on the front lines or his real identity.

They experience some very heartfelt moments where they both discuss the scar that is left on Jinshi’s cheeks. This segment was really beautiful because when Jinshi asks whether scars will demean his value, Maomao answers that imperfections will have quite the opposite effect. She would much rather see him with a few more scars because, unlike his flashing outer appearance, Jinshi is much more honest. People only end up judging him by his appearance, and that should not be the case.

However, this episode did not just bring heart-thumping romance, but also some rapid political changes within the Kingdom. Consort Gyokuyou has finally stepped up as the new Empress after giving birth to a son. Her son has also been recognised as the Crown Prince, and everybody is extremely thankful to Moamao for her help. There is also another very interesting angle with the kids who died from poison given to them by Loulan, but that is something that you need to find out yourself.
Verdict

All in all, this was an extremely nicely written episode that I personally love throughout. Here, we also get to know what actually happened with Xiaolan, and this part was a bit bittersweet for me. Honestly, I cannot wait for the next season to come as soon as possible because I really, really wish to see what’s new this world has to offer. On top of that, I also cannot wait till I see some more developments within the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi.
