Tempest Review
In Disney+ drama Tempest, Jun Ji-hyun is a straightforward and no-nonsense diplomat whose world is turned upside down when she uncovers a shocking conspiracy right in the middle of tensions between North and South Korea. After her husband, Assemblyman Jang Jun-ik, is assassinated, a shadowy San-ho is assigned to be her bodyguard, and although he is initially sceptical, he finds himself drawn to her, resulting in him taking up the job.
Featuring Jun Ji-hyun and Gang Dong-won in lead roles, this is an absolutely thrilling watch that will make you do a double-take every few minutes. Jun proves to be a presence to reckon with in this series as she handles the heartbreak of watching her husband be murdered in cold blood, fend off her in-laws and deal with a pesky brother-in-law who has a lot of terrible ideas up his sleeve.

The series, at least the first five episodes, is absolutely arresting, mostly due to Mun-ju’s fantastic character. The series doesn’t forget to showcase her vulnerabilities along with her resilience, and we easily feel connected to her in more ways than one. On the other hand, Gang Dong-won’s San-ho is an enigma in and of himself, and the mysterious aura surrounding him feels interesting and engaging. Plus, he’s fantastic in his action sequences, and the two of them have a really electrifying chemistry.
Meanwhile, the geopolitical situation continues to escalate as tensions rise between North and South Korea, along with the US. The series showcases these deftly, along with the heartbreaking ordeal that Mun-ju goes through. The balance of these different situations makes us feel deeply included in the complicated scenarios as we wait with bated breath to figure out who assassinated Jun-ik and whether a war is truly on the horizon for the countries. The interesting part about the show is that it never feels boring, nor does it try to keep us out of the loop. The situation is serious, and the series wants us to understand why.

Considering the current political scenario around the world, the series feels real in a way that will give you goosebumps. Albeit fictional, it gets its facts straight and puts them forth with a no-nonsense attitude that feels riveting. However, if you like fast-paced, action-packed espionage thrillers, this might be a bit taxing for you because it is a bit slow-paced and takes its time exposing the truth.
The ending turns out to be a complicated spectacle with multiple moving parts, and the answers come swiftly. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long for them, so that’s a win. It’s a little bittersweet and can sometimes feel a bit unbelievable, but it is satisfying regardless. Maybe a happy ending would’ve checked all the boxes all too well!
Final Thoughts

Tempest is a strong thriller that mesmerises us with a story that is complicated and realistic. Moreover, the leads are simply fantastic and a treat to watch. The ending is bittersweet but satisfying and will leave you hooked throughout.
