Napoleon Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Dons the Complex Frenchman’s Legacy

Apple TV+ is diving into historical fiction with the Napoleon trailer’s release. Directed by the ever-talented Ridley Scott, it stars Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Mark Bonnar, Rupert Everett, and Youssef Kerkour, alongside other cast members. The story is written by David Scarpa, while Kevin J Walsh, Mark Huffman, Phoenix and Scott join as the producers on this project. Dariusz Wolski is the director of photography; Claire Simpson joins as the lead editor, and Arthur Max serves as the production designer.

This film shows the man Napoleon Bonaparte as he rises through the ranks, cuts down enemies amidst a revolution and becomes an emperor of one of the most turbulent nations of the world. While history lessons are always what take up this story, the film aspires to bring a different perspective by having the events told through the lens of his relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. In the trailer, we start off by seeing our main character through the end of the revolution.

Napoleon Trailer: Still 1
A still from the movie

People have started to take to the streets in protest, and France is no longer stable. There will be a power vacuum soon, and that means there is a chance for someone to take this opportunity and become the leader that this country needs. For now, people are ready to transfer the power to Bonaparte. He took the reins and decided to open fire on the French public. His promises to bring France to justice were fulfilled pretty well, because he was actually able to guillotine Marie Antoinette out and invite the new guard in.

While he may still be ready to continue being a weapon of mass destruction across continents, the new royalty had underestimated what they dragged in. Now that Bonaparte carried power among the soldiers, the people and the foreign envoys, he was not just a measly commander. He is a diplomat with the ability to turn tables at a whim. Bursting into the doors of the palace, he points guns at all the royal members and crowns himself King in their midst.

However, becoming King is just the first step. There are new world powers stirring under the table, they are rising through the ranks, and Napoleon fails to see them while he still enjoys his castle built over bones. The tyranny he has started and continues to impose is just the beginning of how France shapes out to be under his thumb. Josephine is there along with him at all times, being the cutting voice of reason and reality in this high-stakes game of death and power.
