Maybe Today (Ngayon Kaya) Review: Tale of Love and Its Tragedies

Directed by Prime Cruz and written by Jenilee Chuaunsu, Maybe Today aka Ngayon Kaya is a 2022 Filipino romance drama film under production company T.Rex Entertainment and WASD Films. With a total runtime of 99 minutes, the movie centres on the ups and downs of a young man and a woman’s friendship. This movie will make you want to fall in love all over again!

The main characters of the movie are – Paulo Avelino, who is also one of the executive producers of the movie as Harold, and Janine Gutierrez as Amanda “AM”. The rest of the cast includes Alwyn Uytingco, John James Uy, Donna Cariaga as Lea, Harold’s ex-boyfriend, Haley Dizon, and Rio Locsin.

Netflix synopsis of the movie:

A chance meeting at a friend’s wedding rekindles old feelings between two college friends as they wonder whether it’s too late for their love.

-Maybe Today Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

The most noticeably positive thing about the movie is its simplicity. The plot of the movie is straightforward and does what it is intended to do. It does not necessarily complicate the movie any further, which makes it relatable to the audience. The raw emotions displayed throughout make the story engaging. That is what makes the movie stand out.

The plot, along with the mesmerizing background score; helps elevate the story. Since the script surrounds music as well, the songs did not disappoint. Two ordinary individuals struggling to make a name in the world of music kept the film fresh. It adds to the story and further keeps us intrigued. The use of music in the storytelling process rarely ever goes wrong.

Another aspect of the movie that stands out is its use of beautiful locations. The busy roads, the wedding hall, and the view from the mountaintop at night just seemed all too pretty and keeps the audience glued to the screen. The styling of the cast with simple outfits and costumes, and the use of musical instruments as props also kept the story real and grounded.

As for the performances by the actors, Janine Gutierrez as Amanda “AM” definitely stole the show. Her acting seemed way too real at times which made the movie even more relatable. Her display of emotions was on point at all times and made the audience relate to her each time. The performance of Paulo Avelino as Harold often felt off at times. He was not able to get through to the viewers. The other cast included did a good job in their respective roles since they had little to no lines the entire movie.

Even then, the chemistry between the actors was good. The on-screen relationship between the actors is what made the film work. They blended well with each other and also looked good together. They seemed comfortable with each other on-screen, which made the storytelling process easier.

The major takeaway from the movie would be to take chances and seize the day. Unspoken words can leave us heartbroken, so expressing what we feel at that moment itself is what the movie wants to exhibit. Living in the moment, being our true selves, communicating with our loved ones, and not waiting around for the “right time” is conveyed through the plot.

Maybe Today: Final Thoughts

A movie about two individuals falling in love, yet they could never express it to each other, is a tragedy. Unspoken words leave a void in both their lives forever, no matter how hard they try to overcome them. A simple, light-hearted movie that will leave you sad and make you feel the emotions the movie is trying to indicate through it. Through the simple lives of two ordinary people in the Philippines, it makes us appreciate the beauty in little things.
