This episode turns the spotlight on Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi, developing their characters while setting the stage for greater challenges. Things open with Iharu’s backstory, showing how he once dreamed of being among the strongest but now feels overshadowed by peers like Reno. His frustration stems from being left behind, questioning his place in the Defence Force.

Meanwhile, Reno begins a rigorous fight against his target with the new suit. Here, he must complete the job swiftly, as prolonged synchronisation risks destroying his body. On the battlefield, Reno pushes hard, leaving Iharu struggling to keep up. When Reno’s synchronisation spikes dangerously high, his body begins to break down, with bleeding eyes and rupturing muscles. He becomes obsessed with defeating the Kaiju, and he nearly loses control.

This moment could have spelt disaster, but Iharu steps in, showing both courage and loyalty. Rather than being sidelined, he convinces the squad leader to let Reno continue and supports him by drawing the Honju’s attention, allowing Reno to strike effectively.

Kaiju No 8 Season 2 Episode 8: Still

Today’s episode starts with a powerful fight sequence, and it establishes the connection between Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi very nicely. It gets proven that Iharu is not useless, as his capabilities literally spike from the base level of a minimal 20% to more than 40% depending on his productivity. He is almost as powerful as Reno when he locks in, and that proves that Iharu has the capability of becoming a hero.

But the best aspect is that, even after knowing he is not as strong as Reno, he decides to force his way through to fight against Kaijus. Needless to say, they secure a great victory against the Kaiju, and Reno officially becomes the wielder of Kaiju No 6’s power. It becomes clear that Iharu is needed for Reno to stay in control.

Later, we see Kafka contemplating whether he himself has any power to protect others because everyone needs the power of Kaiju No 8, but not the help of a human like him. That notion gets broken by Hoshina, who thanks him for protecting his squad by revealing his Kaiju appearance in front of others, despite knowing the risks. He even tells Kafka not to transform anymore, as he will be the one to take down Kaiju No 9 because he knows that if Kafka continues to transform, he will cease to become a human.

But after understanding Kafka’s conviction as someone who wants to fight, Hoshina agrees to teach him how to perform well in combat. Here, we see significant changes within Kafka, who has effectively learned to box. He can also hold a proper hand-to-hand fight, but is still too weak against Hoshina. However, Hoshina acknowledges his efforts and even compliments his style by promising he will make Kafka stronger.

Verdict

I absolutely loved today’s episode as the sequence between Iharu and Reno was very heartfelt. The best part of Kaiju No 8 season 2 is that it gives a spotlight to all of its characters, whether they are side characters or main characters. Kafka’s growth was also showcased in a very nice way, and I hope they manage to keep this up throughout this season.
