IT – Welcome to Derry Episode 1 Recap

The episode opens with Matty Clements making a run for it after sneaking into the theatre without a ticket. It’s clear that his home life is unstable and abusive, and he eventually makes a run for it when he’s caught by one of the attendants. On his way out of Derry, he hitches a ride with a family who are going to Portland. Although they start normally, things take an uncomfortable turn when the entire family starts to act strangely. In the end, ghostly things start to happen in the car, ending in Matty presumably getting killed.

Four months later, Leroy Hanlon arrives at Derry airbase. At the same time, Teddy, Phil, Lilly, and Ronnie, four average kids, find themselves in the midst of a mystery after realising that several kids have gone missing. While Teddy and Phil fight over Matty’s death and their relationship with him, Lilly thinks back to her own time with Matty and how he was kind to her when others weren’t. Lilly gets a vision of Matty trying to reach out to her through the bathtub drain, and when she opens up to Margie about it, the two fight.

Lilly eventually reaches out to Teddy and Phil, and although they don’t believe her at first, Teddy has a similar horrifying dream that leaves all of them to investigate Matty’s disappearance. After reading newspaper clippings, they arrive at Ronnie’s house and realise that she, too, is having visions about Matty.

Meanwhile, Leroy faces racism at the airbase, which his superior tries to curb, while some shadowy men try to get the specs of the new planes that he’s supposed to test out. The kids, on the other hand, arrive at the theatre to watch the film whose song Matty apparently was singing through the drains. Things start normally in the film at first, but soon they spot Matty in the film, leaving them shocked and confused.

Of course, things get out of hand soon, as Matty becomes demonic and then throws the devil baby towards them, leaving all the kids scared. The kids make a run for it until the demon kills everyone except Lilly and Ronnie, leaving them both traumatised.

IT – Welcome to Derry Episode 1: Amanda Christine, Clara Stack

IT – Welcome to Derry starts off another terrifying chapter of the IT franchise, with a ton of kids going missing, dying and finding themselves in the most bizarre situations. Although we don’t get to see Pennywise yet, the first episode starts unexpectedly with a ton of kills that I didn’t expect. Now that we know the stakes, things hopefully only go up from here. What will Lilly and Ronnie do with half of their friends now seemingly dead? Is this another one of Pennywise’s tricks? We can only wait to find out in the next episode!

However, I will say that I am not impressed with the silly mutant baby. It’s far too kooky for me to believe in, regardless of whether or not it’s actually happening in real life. I’d much rather watch Pennywise than whatever abomination this is and hope that it never comes back to our screens again.
