Personally, I love musicals; however, I am not a big fan of musical comedy sketches, as comedians can hardly ever pull them off. After witnessing the depleting quality of musical comedies in Saturday Night Life, I had given up my hopes. Still, Jamie arrived like a ray of sunshine to spread happiness through absurd songs accompanied by strange lyrics.

The show opens with a fully grown Jamie inside his mother’s womb singing about how beautiful life is. The sketch is divided into three acts: Youth, Adulthood and Golden Days. It starts with a hopeful song describing how delightful childhood is, but the scenes showcase otherwise. The most intriguing aspect of the show is its relatability. It displays a clear distinction between the older generation and the newer one regarding the difference in lifestyle.

The comedian also manages to include a few social issues, like how obsessed the present generation is with their phones and social media and that they have lost real human connection. Soon after, the adulthood phase is shown, where he interprets the repeated daily life of an average office worker. The unrealistic expectations from a husband and father, which leads a man to commit atrocities, are depicted through another song with lively beats and melancholy lyrics.

Jamie also includes a sketch of a reality dating show which describes most ongoing reality TV shows. The absurdity in the segment is funny because of its truthfulness in it. It shows how the “attractiveness” of a person is held in the highest regard in society. However, the jokes do get a bit dark at times, but it balances it out with the witty and off-beat script.

Finally, the golden days are shown, which are not so golden as the older generation suffers from boredom. They are unable to connect with the young generation due to technological differences. Jamie does an excellent job with the build-up, and the revelations remain simple, which is exactly what he was trying to achieve. The number of challenges in life that people go through is a result of shallow, minute issues.

The comedian does an incredible job of showcasing modern-day issues and for being able to create a funny narrative around them. The jokes are not obvious, yet one will not have much difficulty understanding them. Through an awkward and uncomfortable environment, the scenes hit the mark each time.

A Whole Lifetime With Jamie Demetriou Review: Final Thoughts

Jamie Demetriou is a modern-day storyteller with quality and funny jokes. The uncomfortable conversations of life that one avoids are depicted precisely and straightforwardly. One hour will feel too short as the sketch is entertaining and contains a unique script. The audience will laugh along and keep returning to reminisce about the awkward musical.
