The Asset Review

What happens when the target of your super secret mission becomes a close friend, someone you feel obligated to protect in any way possible? Netflix’s The Asset is a thrilling and eventful watch that, over 6 episodes, tells an interesting tale full of lies, deceit and manipulation, and brings into question whether everything that the police do is truly the only right thing.

The series follows Tea, an inexperienced cadet, who finds herself in the midst of a dangerous mission when she is suddenly recruited to do undercover work by infiltrating a dangerous drug ring. However, complications arise when she grows to care for her target, Ashley, and her young daughter and things slowly get murkier. The series asks some interesting questions and makes you question everyone’s decisions at every turn. The question that remains in the end is – does Tea miss the forest for the trees?

I think the series is quite restrained and, thus, believable as we watch personal and professional relationships shift. It’s a little simple, but it worked for me because I believed everything that was happening. The emotions in the series are just as important as the crime thriller aspect, maybe even a bit more. The focus is mostly on Ashley and Tea and their complicated lives in the midst of some powerful men who want to control them at every turn. You feel bad for Ashley, who is in her own limbo of handing her husband over to the police and keeping him and her family safe.

I will say that the crime aspect does take a bit of a backseat, so if you want complicated crime ring action to happen, this is probably not the show for you. That being said, it has several layers to it that will interest most viewers, and I found myself on the edge of my seat, wondering whether or not Tea will make the sensible decision or the emotional one. Plus, Clara Dessau and Maria Cordsen are pretty great and hold on to the emotional core well. Afshin Firouzi is terrifying as Miran as well.

The heart of the show is Ashley and Tea’s relationship and how it progresses. It brings to light how much both of them were missing from life and how they found solace in each other in some ways. Although Tea was lying to Ashley, it’s clear that she’s attached to her as well, and the bond that they share feels genuine, making it even more terrifying to wonder what lies waiting for them if Miran knows the truth.

In the end, The Asset is an interesting watch. Is it the most thrilling or complicated show of this month? Not really. But it makes for great entertainment throughout its runtime, with hardly any downtime and some great moral questions.
