Bollywood has made plenty of blockbuster hits like Taare Zameen Par, Dangal, Sholay, and more. But when they try to remake something, they flop most of the time. Speaking of that, there are a handful of worst Hindi remakes of South Indian movies that lost the original plot’s flavour and also made actors lose fame. In fact, producers who poured their money ended up losing it all big time.
Well, I always wonder why we remake a successful movie when we can watch the original one and learn about other cinema industry actors and check out the unique locations. Anyway, since the movie industry sometimes gains success by leeching on remakes, here are some of the bad Hindi remakes of South Indian movies that just shouldn’t have been made.
8 Worst Hindi Remakes of South Indian Movies
Laxmii
Adapted from Raghave Lawrence’s horror movie Kanchana, Laxmii is Lawrence’s Hindi directorial debut which hit the downfall surprisingly. Starring Akshay Kumar as Asif, who visits a haunted ground and invokes a transperson spirit seeking revenge. Akshay Kumar ultimately acts as the Laxmi-possessed transperson. However, the spotlight was on Sharad Kelkar, who acted as the transwoman in the backstory. The movie hit its rough patch because it didn’t raise the expectations bar and ultimately ended up succeeding in trending for memes.
OK Jaanu
Truth be told, OK Kanmani wasn’t even celebrated much in South India except for the backlash it received for portraying a living-together relationship that ultimately ended in marriage. Thanks to A R Rahman, the songs are evergreen, but apart from that, Mani Ratnam’s movie didn’t make a mark on everyone’s mind. When the Hindi version, OK Jaanu, was released, it became known because of the actors indeed, but importantly because of A R Rahman’s music. Apart from these factors, the movie remake was blunt.
Ramaiya Vastavaiya
To date, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana is one of the most cherished Telugu romantic comedy movies with Kdrama vibes. Apparently, it was also remade in Tamil as Something Something Unakum Enakum which became a blockbuster hit. However, Ramaiya Vastavaiya failed.
Run
Madhavan’s hit movie Run was a mega hit because the chocolate boy’s acting is not a joke, truth be told. When the Hindi version came out with the same name, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Bhoomika Chawla, it didn’t cut. Not that the movie was bad but in reality, it just didn’t had the necessity for a remake.
Ekk Deewana Tha
There were too many things wrong with this movie that just left me disturbed. Firstly, adapted from GVM’s most famous romantic movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, which taught life and love, Ekk Deewana Tha director decided to choose Amy Jackson to lead the movie. Why? Why choose a woman who can’t even speak Hindi? She clearly didn’t express a tad-bit romance. After witnessing STR’s intense acting, I wonder why the male lead messed up big time.
Tevar
Simply bad. The Hindi remake of the Telugu hit Okkadu disappointed the audience so badly. In fact, the same movie was remade in Tamil as Ghilli and Kannada as Ajay, and both flicks are celebrated till now for their quirkiness it had. But the Hindi remake, Tevar, terribly failed at recreating such a fun and adventurous movie.
Force
Force is a remake of the Tamil film Kaakha Kaakha starring Suriya and Jyothika in the lead. While the remake isn’t too bad, it still is bad. The original movie made the crowd cry in the theatre when the climax caved in, but the Hindi version didn’t touch the heart. John Abraham and Vidyut Jamwal acted well, but overall, the movie didn’t give the energy like the original one.
Dayavan
The Tamil movie Nayakan starring South Indian acting prodigy Kamal Hassan won him the National award for Best Actor. It is still one of the movies with highly positive critics. Sadly, the Hindi remake, Dayavan, ruined it. Truly, Madhuri Dixit is the reason why I gave it a shot.
