When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 11 Recap
Ae-sun waits in the hospital for her daughter to gain consciousness when Cheong-yeop arrives to help her out. Right then, Yeong-beom rushes past them to Geum-myeong and shows his concern for her in a way that reminds Ae-sun of Gwan-sik. While she secretly rejoices over Geum-myeong’s choice of a boyfriend, she is shocked to find out that his mother doesn’t like her which makes her against their relationship.
Elsewhere, the three Haenyeo ladies have a laugh while teasing Eun-myeong by telling him about Sang-gil and Ae-sun’s marriage meeting. This shocks him so much that he decides to leave for his military service. Meanwhile, Geum-myeong is shocked to find out that Cheong-yeop has also left for his military service without telling her about it. She then sees the painting he made for her and is shocked to see her face. As she reminisces about her time with him, the scene shifts to show that a special someone has come to meet Gwan-sik.

Soon, the season changes with Geum-myeong and Yeong-beom’s relationship moving towards marriage and a family meeting is held for the same. However, it doesn’t go as expected and Ae-sun is filled with regrets when seeing her precious daughter being pushed into the role of a self-sacrificing daughter-in-law. The meeting ends with Ae-sun in tears while Gwan-sik feels bad for his daughter.
The chaos doesn’t stop here but the wedding preparations are on its way. However, Ae-sun continues to keep quiet for her daughter throughout the preparations so that she wouldn’t have to suffer much. Unfortunately, Yeong-beom’s mother doesn’t stop as she tells Ae-sun to help her stop the wedding as they aren’t meant to be together due to their societal status.
Ae-sun just shows her pity for Yeong-beom for having such a mother and doesn’t say anything else. Later, Yeong-beom’s mother arrives at his apartment and rushes to Geum-myeong, accusing her of causing a drift between the mother and son.

In her anger, she also reveals what she said to Ae-sun which leaves Geum-myeong shocked as she is unable to take it anymore. She finally ends up breaking the engagement and walks out of there. But before she leaves, she too shows her pity for Yeong-beom which reminds her of what Ae-sun said to her.
The scene shifts and we see her in the future where her son has grown all the more distant from her and is leading an unhappy life. Yeong-beom is distressed by how she only feels pity for herself and no one else and tells her to look at his wedding picture in which no one else is smiling but her.
Coming back to the present, Geum-myeong is chased by Yeong-beom for a year so that they can fix their relationship. However, she is adamant about not getting back together because she cannot tolerate his family and cannot see him break off his relationship with his family and be sad. Finally, the two end their relationship with tears in their eyes and love in their hearts; also ending the fairytale of their first love together.

When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 11 Review
Not every fairytale gets its happy ending, and while Ae-sun finds her happy ending, Geum-myeong shows us the other side of the fairytale of one’s first love. To show both these pictures in one Korean drama is something that we can only experience in this show. Not only do we see the two sides of the coin but also see a beauty in them both. Surely, the next segment is going to continue the fairytale of this tragic princess and give her a happy ending, but for now, it ends with a sadness that is sure to make her stronger.
Meanwhile, we also get to see how parents can change the world of their children with their actions. On one hand, Geum-myeong is able to stand up for herself and find her freedom because of her parents; but on the other side, we also have Yeong-beom who never finds happiness in his life again because of his overbearing mother. One never sees the cage while the other forever stays trapped in his prison.

Thus, giving us another lesson on life and family, the show manages to set a high bar for any new Korean drama that is to be released this year. It is showing us the many colours and sides of life and we are once again melting because of this show.
