What If Season 2 Episode 9 Ending Explained

At the end of What If Season 2 Episode 9, taking Kahhori’s taunt about being outnumbered to heart, Strange Supreme summons an entire army of versions of himself. Peggy responds in kind, replicating herself and Kahhori. However, Strange quickly dispels this challenge by transforming all the duplicate women into butterflies. He then compels Peggy into a flashback, revisiting the day she received the supersoldier serum.

Peggy suddenly finds herself in the lab, standing alongside Steve (Josh Keaton), disoriented by the surreal experience. As they head to the platform where Dr. Erskine is preparing to administer the serum to Steve, he confesses his love for Peggy, prompting her to realize it’s just an illusion crafted by Strange. She breaks free from the vision by physically confronting Strange. In an attempt to thwart his plans, Kahhori engages with Strange, leading to a prolonged struggle as they manipulate the characters in and out of the Forge. As the story nears its conclusion, this sequence feels drawn out, with the two women fighting resolutely to confront Strange’s misguided sense of entitlement.

Powerful weapons like Hela’s helmet, Thor’s hammer, and Wenwu’s rings are hurled at the women by the falling heroes and villains. This distraction allows Kahhori to open portals beneath them, sending everyone home, including her friend Atahraks. Equipped with a combination of these weapons, Kahhori and Peggy gain the upper hand against Strange until he transforms into a massive horned demon, still fixated on bringing back Christine.

Peggy’s armour sheds the Infinity Stones, which Kahhori helps her integrate into a glove. Using this makeshift gauntlet, Peggy literally punches the evil out of Strange, briefly restoring him to normal. When Peggy asks for help stopping the Forge from exploding, Strange, consumed by grief, claims he can’t assist. Unfortunately, the respite is short-lived as the evil reasserts control, and he drags Peggy into the depths, leading to a dramatic and seemingly explosive climax.
