Whale Store XOXO Episode 1 Recap
The episode opens with Wan discussing the growing number of robberies in their neighbourhood and then coming across someone breaking into her own store. When she tries to confront her, she is left shocked when she sees a beautiful woman in front of her.
We then jump to two weeks before this incident, and Maewnam is doing deliveries all around, while Wan rushes around trying to get to her work. However, the big presentation doesn’t pan out, while at home, her father falls ill, and Maewnam finds him. When she finally gets the news, she is left heartbroken and immediately rushes home.
Realising that there’s no time to put up with the mess at work, she quits right afterwards and moves back home. On the other hand, Maewnam starts her job as a professor and seems very happy with the new direction her life has taken. That day, on her way back home, she comes across Wan (from the first scene in this episode) in front of Wan’s shop and strikes up a friendship with her, promising to help fix the things in her father’s shop, while she opens up about her heartbreak of not giving her father attention when he was alive.
Overcome with sadness, Wan goes back and goes through her father’s things and comes across a flyer, mentioning that a chain grocery store is coming to their locality. He was clearly very unhappy about it, since it was crossed out. Grief-stricken, she takes it upon herself to take care of her father’s store. Elsewhere, Maewnam faces an awkward situation with her mother, who is seemingly unhappy with her life choices.
That night, both frustrated with their life choices, the two come across each other once again, and decide to keep pushing forward with their choices.
Whale Store XOXO Episode 1 Review
This seems like it’s going to be a sweet, sensitive and positive watch with a possible love angle between Wan and Maewnam! They are signalling it from the first episode, which is surprising because that’s not usually how we see it in Korean dramas. Either way, I had a great time watching it, although some moments are quite repetitive, which will make you want to skip through a bit.
