Werewolf By Night Review: Early Halloween Treat, Specially for Marvel Fans

Werewolf By Night is Marvel’s Halloween special film on Disney+ Hotstar. It stars Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, Harriet Sansom Harris as Verusa, Al Hamacher as Billy Swan, Eugenie Bondurant as Linda, Kirk Thatcher as Jovan, Leonardo Nam as Simon, and others. Based on Marvel Comics’ character of the same name, the screenplay is penned by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. The 50-minute special is directed by Michael Giacchino, who also composed the music.

The synopsis reads, “Following the death of their commander, a secret club of monster hunters gather at Bloodstone Manor to compete in a deadly game for a dangerous relic that will pit them against a terrifying creature.”

Disney+ Hotstar’s Werewolf By Night Review Contains No Spoilers

Marvel’s Werewolf by Night starts with a narration about how there are heroes (Avengers) who protect us from monsters. Some monster hunters reside around, away and unknown from the real world. One such group of monster hunters gather at the Bloodstone Temple after their leader’s death.

The commander’s wife tells them about a hunt that will lead to one of the hunters winning a powerful relic – the bloodstone. In the hunt, the participants will have to fight a dangerous monster. The winner gets the relic.

With the mention of the original 6 Avengers, in the beginning, Werewolf By Night is now canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). We meet Jack Russell (played by Gael García Bernal). Jack has a mysterious personality and is not much of a talker. As we already know, he’s the Werewolf. But are others aware of another threat they’ll face in the hunt? That’s something to watch.

The special also introduces us to Elsa Bloodstone, the monster hunters’ leader’s daughter. Elsa is not a fan of her family’s traditions and has been away from them. How her presence affects the deadly hunt is something to look forward to.

Werewolf By Night 1

Michael Giacchino has served the Halloween treat in black-and-white and the early 1900s horror movies format. The screenplay by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron is interesting enough to introduce Jack Russell in the MCU. The film serves as an establishment of the Bloodstone family, the monster hunters, Jack and Elsa in the MCU.

Despite having such a promising premise, the film doesn’t have the chilling moments as promised. Even though I am curious to know Jack Russell more and what he will be up to next, his werewolf avatar was a letdown. It didn’t look eerie and intimidating. The chilling effect is instead felt when we see the shadow of his transformation into the Werewolf and a scared Elsa.

Michael Giacchino is the director and composer of the Werewolf by Night. Michael understood the assignment regarding recreating the 1930s cinematic experience with the special film. After The Batman (2022), he has done a phenomenal job producing music that adds tension to the plot.

Actor Gael García Bernal plays the titular role, and his performance impressed me. His character’s charm, darkness and mystery have made me curious to know more about him. Actors Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sansom Harris have important roles, and the duo has done a good job.

Werewolf By Night 2

Werewolf By Night Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Werewolf By Night is strictly for Marvel fans who want to see MCU’s, Jack Russell. It’s an early Halloween treat for them to watch in one go. However, I wish the special had more gory or scary scenes, and the Werewolf CGI would’ve been frightening to give us the sinister feel.

The special will be streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from October 7.
