Vingle Vingle MV: Heize Reflects on Past Relationship Through Social Media Savviness

Vingle Vingle MV is the latest digital single by the Korean singer Heize, as she comes back with a dance track to enthral her fans. Produced by R.Tee of The Black Lable, the song is written and composed by R.Tee, VVN, Kush (쿠시) & Heize (헤이즈). She last released her second full-length album, Undo which was released in June 2022.

In Vingle Vingle, the singer channelizes the dance track with a haunting melody and melancholic lyrics, a combination which strangely works well and soon goes round and round in your head as the Korean title (빙글빙글) literally suggests. Along with the catchy song, what makes it truly interactive is the creative use of the 9:16 aspect ratio, which fits perfectly on a smartphone screen.

Right at the start of the music video, it says that the video is made specifically for smartphone users and when you see the sign, then turn the screen sidewise for better viewing. As the music starts playing, we see a drunk Heize checking her phone if she has received any text or call from her lover, presumably.

It shows how being a known person on the social media platform she has to keep on performing her part – live streaming, posting happy pictures and promoting everything. However, right behind the screen, it’s just a heartbroken girl who waits for her lover despite knowing about all their lies and how the person deceives her.

Soon after the first few verses, the sign appeared to rotate the screen and she breaks into a dance choreography which visually expresses the title (round and round) through the moving head movements and doing similar gestures with the fingers. The lyrics say that she is regretting her relationship and will be taking off her nice mask.

Again for the verses, the video turns upright and we see Heize going through her memories and how she felt at that moment, but slowly she is unleashing her rage and trying to move on from all the pain. The video takes a creative approach of going in and out of the screen and what’s happening in real life with smooth transitions. Like coming out of the world of social media and mixing in hyperrealism by showing that Heize is actually filming the same music video, while also posting about it.

The ending shows that virtually, she is living a glamorous life but the real-life person is lying on a sidewalk drunk and hazed by their feelings that have taken over. With the catchy music and easy yet addictive choreography, the song definitely has the potential to become the next viral thing on social media, also owing to its creative use of aspect ratio which makes it easy to share or use on such sites.
