Urusei Yatsura Episode 7 Review and Recap – Sakura’s Fiance

Like almost every episode of this franchise, this episode as well was pretty random as it did not continue the storyline from the previous episode. The moment it starts, we do not recognise the first character presented in front of us who chills at the bottom of a pool. And then we suddenly see a drowning Ataru slowly sinking and coming towards this creature.

It is only later that we know this creature is a peace-loving yet lonely monster who lives inside a pool. He doesn’t bother anyone and stays in his abode, waiting for someone to visit. He loves to socialise with people, but everyone is scared of him. Thus, when someone comes to his place, he makes sure to play the part of the proper host and serve them to his best capabilities.

But where he lives is not just any pool as it belongs to Mendo. Ataru and his group discover this monster when everyone goes to Mendo’s hotel, for a pool day. There even Sakura sensei was present, and she kicked Ataru towards the pool hence why he was drowning in the beginning.

But another problem arises, as nobody would want a monster inside a pool, this cute little guy will have to leave the place and settle somewhere else. What better place than the bathroom of Ataru’s family home? But after a month, the monster gets kicked out from there as well.

Now the only place where he can go is the sea, where Ataru and his friends take him, hoping to send him off for good. But that is not all, as more hilarity ensues when we discover that Sakura sensei already has a fiance called Tsubame.

The highlight of this episode is definitely the appearance of two new characters, the monster and Tsubame. You genuinely feel pity for the cute monster, who only wishes to live peacefully and wants friends to visit him. On the other hand, you also feel pity for Tsubame, whose romantic moment literally got squashed by Ataru and company.

Surprisingly this episode was not divided into two parts and, it showcased one single story till the end. As the story progresses in the first half, we do not get many funny elements, but in the second half, there are plenty of laughable situations.

Verdict

All in all, it was an entertaining watch, not something too deep, but engaging anyway. I believe this is the charm of Urusei Yatsura, its ability to be random and ridiculous. When you start this anime, you know it will not be your typical shonen anime, and you just have to enjoy the idiotic situations the characters face daily. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
