Aattam

Bringing the theme of sexual violence towards women, this film is a piece of art that has raised standards for many. This Malayalam film has got a wholesome plot which has been beautifully put together with the cast where each actor portrays their characters in ways that will leave you stunned. It pulls you into a whirlpool as you begin to question everything you’ve known all over again.

Aattam follows the sole actress of a theatre group who has been subjected to violence by one of the men in the group. A meeting is called for to reach a consensus where stories begin to unravel. While the film screened in various film festivals in 2023, it was released in theatres in 2024 which is why we have added the film to this list.

Maharaja

This Tamil language thriller has been one of the best this year, as there is no denying that the Indian film industry is bringing some of the best films of 2024. The plot of this film is perfect for thriller fans and will keep you hooked with excitement bubbling within you as you look forward to what is going to happen next.

Maharaja follows a barber whose house has been burglarized after which he is on a quest to recover what is lost. However, he only leaves a cryptic message with the police that his “lakshmi” has been stolen, leaving them confused about whether it is a person or an object.

My Old Ass

This coming-of-age comedy-drama film has been a pleasure to watch this year as it brings a neat twist to the old meets the young troupe. This film is a thorough entertainer which will give you some relatable vibes if you are a Gen Z, especially because of how authentic their description is.

My Old Ass follows a teenager who comes face-to-face with her 39-year-old self who gives her warnings on what she should and shouldn’t do, making her rethink her decisions in life.

Things Will Be Different

Finally, we have a sci-fi thriller that is different from your regular cinema; it challenges regular cinema as it takes you on an artistic experience. Accompanied by the emotional weight of the film, this is truly a marvellous experience if you overlook some of the pacing issues that come with the film.

Things Will Be Different follows two estranged siblings who are trying to flee from the police after a close-call robbery. However, when hiding in a farmhouse, they are taken to another time altogether.
