Umjolo: There is No Cure Review

The plot of this film follows a former pageant queen who falls into a scandal which leaves her in a mess. In order to fix things for herself, she decides to publish a memoir and gets in touch with her favourite author. However, this meeting turns into something more as they two find themselves with feelings that weren’t expected. But will the two ever be able to confront their emotions?

I have to start by saying that this is one of the better (almost best) movies I’ve watched in this anthology so far. This comment comes especially after the previous film that almost seemed disastrous. This is a better rom-com and I love how everything falls into place so smoothly as the two come to finally work on their feelings instead of keeping them hidden.

I have also loved the sneak peeks we get of the stars from the previous films which truly makes everything come together in this anthology as a whole. The stories are surely moving forward, but previous stars are not being forgotten and this makes me feel like I’m back for another Umjolo round, which in a way leaves me happy. The rom-coms know how to keep you hooked and I have loved how easily everything moves forward.

Additionally, as this is the final film of the South African love anthology following the lives of some amazing women, I am happy with how this final film is about girl love. We’ve seen quite some types of love surrounding women, and I am happy to see that LGBTQ+ couples are not left behind in this series. It is not always the men who mess up, but women, too, know how to create chaos.

Moving on, I have to appreciate the performance brought together by the cast who have shown us some good chemistry, raw emotions of love and heartbreak, confusion about one’s romance, and more. I have seen these emotions pass by on the expressions of the characters and I have to appreciate this without doubt. These emotions really bring about a good experience for the audience and this is where we see ourselves falling in love with the characters.

Meanwhile, we know that the ending of rom-coms such as this one is predictable and sure, but seeing the characters grow is part of the experience and I have loved seeing this in Umjolo: There is No Cure. This has to be one of the less dramatic and smoother of the films which is bringing me peace in a way I didn’t expect.

Altogether, this Umjolo series of films has been a joy to watch and I hope the creators think about a similar series with men as the central characters. Hopefully, they will use the same men who have been left behind in these films because I would love to know their story and see if they ever find happiness in their lives.

Summing Up

Umjolo: There is No Cure is a cute little film that brings an end to this anthology with a young couple who learn to give their love a chance, regardless of the many doubts that cloud their hearts. This film is a good watch and certainly better than the previous film.
