Two Graves Review

In Netflix’s Two Graves, a desperate and grieving grandmother tries to figure out what happened to her granddaughter two years ago and get revenge, but realises too late that it’s going to cost her far too much than she could ever have imagined. The series, with only 3 episodes, is enjoyable and fast-paced, packing a ton of information into a short runtime and giving us an ending that makes us raise our eyebrows just a bit.

The quick, easy runtime means that viewers will find it easier to forgive some transgressions that the series ends up making. Some of the sequences feel implausible, especially moments surrounding the police and their incompetence, and Rafael’s powers, but you don’t feel it because the series is presented well and makes for a good watch.

Its biggest win is its short runtime, and although I know that I am repeating myself, it truly does make a difference. The series doesn’t linger on inconsequential things, cuts plot lines off willy-nilly and rushes forward without a care, leaning more towards delivering an emotional finale about family rather than one fraught with revenge. It’s easy to fall for Isabel’s mission because she’s a 70-year-old grandmother who loves her granddaughter. So, naturally, when she takes up arms, it’s not without its thrills.

And, you know what? I am all for it. I cheered Isabel on like my life depended on it, not just because the series does a good job of creating sympathy for her, but also because she mixes sleeping pills into people’s drinks without a care in the world and is badass in general. Kiti Mánver makes for a fantastic Isabel, and it’s hard not to love her. She delivers every minute of her performance with finesse, while Álvaro Morte is fantastic as well as a grieving, dangerous dad with a dead daughter.

There isn’t much to hang on to in the series, though. I will say that there aren’t many twists that will leave you shocked, and the final conflict is also quite obvious. It’s enjoyable in the heat of the moment, but otherwise forgettable. In the end, though, I will say that the series makes you question whether or not revenge is always the best answer. With everything resurfacing because of Isabel’s thirst for uncovering the truth, her cold demeanour that made her unapproachable, and eventually leading to her putting her own family’s life on the line, the series makes for a good watch because it makes us point our fingers at ourselves before running to confront others.

If you need a quick, easy and somewhat bloody fix this weekend, Two Graves makes for a good watch. It depends more on emotions than on the thrills and is ultimately forgettable, but it is enjoyable in the moment and won’t leave you too disappointed if you don’t look too deep!
