Tuiskoms Review

This African series, which translates to “homecoming” showcases a woman having lost everything, moving to her hometown to start anew. But before that, she is a viral meme sensation, having doubled down on a customer’s complaint and eaten pubic hair in public. The series showcases her leaving her past behind and embracing new changes while recreating her bonds with her mother and parents, who are going through their own crises.

The series is a light-hearted slice-of-life venture that follows some expected path. First and foremost, everyone in Fleur’s hometown hates her before she steps foot at home, a trope we have seen too often. The enemies-to-lovers arc of neighbours feels very old at this point, although there is warmth in the interaction that our protagonist has with everyone around her. Amalia Uys is wonderful in the series and showcases a vulnerability which is very important for her character’s growth.

In shows like this one, the protagonist usually starts off as insufferable and we slowly fall for her character arc. Interestingly, Fleur isn’t completely terrible in this series and albeit a bit unhinged, is enjoyable to root for. Okay, I will accept that she is extremely insufferable sometimes, but you know, there has to be some problem that needs solving. I like her little quips with her husband, they help humanise her character a lot.

The series is light-hearted with some fun moments and a lot of emotions. It’s quite entertaining and everyone’s performances are really good. There are not a lot of thrilling or excitable moments, but it does portray the drama of Fleur’s life well. Life is seldom full of dramatic moments but the everyday humdrum is nice to witness sometimes. However, if you’re looking for something which might bring out intense emotions, you might find yourself somewhat disappointed. The series’s showcase of grief and how Fleur overcomes these obstacles in her life is relatable and you believe her methods and her pitfalls.
