Thor: Love and Thunder is directed by Taika Waititi. The Marvel film stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Natalie Portman as Jane/Mighty Thor, Tessa Thompson as King Valkyrie, Taika Waititi as Korg, Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, and Russel Crowe as Zeus. Taika wrote the screenplay along with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
The synopsis reads, “The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.”
Thor: Love and Thunder Review Contains No Spoilers
In the film Thor: Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor struggles with grief. He has lost many people in the past few years and seems afraid of connections. Thor just wants to relax and think, but he has no idea that Gorr the God Butcher is going around slaying Gods one by one. Another big surprise is his ex-girlfriend Jane wielding the Mjolnir and becoming the Mighty Thor.
After killing a lot of gods, Gorr’s next target is Thor. The God of Thunder teams up with his ex, King Valkyrie, Korg and two large goats to defeat the god butcher. The film covers the battle between the Gods and the God butcher while also adding some romance, a few jokes and some jealousy.
When Thor: Ragnarok came out, many Marvel fans couldn’t stop praising it. Taika Waititi changed the way we looked at Thor in the MCU. He was funny; he was determined and magnificently powerful. Taika managed to generate sympathy and some laughter while showing us what Thor is up to in Love and Thunder.
By bringing back Jane, he added some love to the superhero story. Adding a maniac god butcher also makes for an interesting villain plot. The fight in the Shadow Realm stands out in Thor: Love and Thunder. The entire scene is black and white. However, when there’s a sparkle of light, the makers have finely added colour only to the parts where the light reached. That scene was one of the finest visual effects editings I’ve seen in any Marvel movie so far!

Aside from that, the scenes between Star-Lord and Thor were sweet. But it seemed like everyone was rushing to wrap up the sequences and go on to the next. The haste led to a very hurried plot that could have been considerably deeper, more engaging, and more enjoyable. Taika delivering another Ragnarok was not what I was expecting. But as a director, this was his weak film to date.
The rush in the screenplay was sensed in every alternate sequence. It negatively impacted the humour, the emotional depth, and the supporting cast. In Ragnarok, we see so much of the menacing Hela (Cate Blanchett), who turned out to be one of the best MCU villains.
Gorr, played by Bale, had the same potential because of his performance and frightening appearance. Sadly, he wasn’t treated equally as Hela. Tessa Thompson’s portrayal of the King Valkyrie was also underwhelming. Taika gave us one of the best characters in Ragnarok, only to completely waste her here. Tessa and Valkyrie deserve better treatment.
Chris Hemsworth is once again superb in his performance as the God of Thunder Thor. Only Thor has undergone as much character development as any other superhero. He has dealt with loss or anguish in every movie, emerging from it only after experiencing the depth of his sadness. Hemsworth would have undoubtedly given a standout performance if the story had more substance.
I would much rather have a broken and depressed Thor who has lost everything than a superhero who has gone insane and begun kidnapping people and attempting to kill a kid.

For a short time, Christian Bale steals the show. He looks scary as Gorr, and we learn why he starts butchering god. But I wished Taika had shown us his murderous feats, which would have matched his deadly appearance. It isn’t easy to process the conclusion given to his character.
Natalie Portman reprises her role as Dr Jane Foster in Love and Thunder, and we also see her as the Mighty Thor. Portman delivers a powerful performance that has enormous potential. But once more, it seemed her role as Mighty Thor was just included to help the “love” aspect of the plot make sense.
Thor: Love and Thunder Review: Final Review
Overall, Thor: Love and Thunder is the weakest MCU film of Phase 4 so far. I thought nothing could come closer to the decent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But I was mistaken. While I admire Thor’s character development, the writing should have been better for everyone, especially Christian Bale.
