This is Us Season 6 Episode 4 Recap Contains Major Spoilers
In This is Us Season 6 Episode 4, Jack decides to go to Ohio for his mother’s funeral. Rebecca insists that she and the kids can join him. But Jack says it’s a long car drive, there’s a blizzard and the kids weren’t even close to his mom/their grandma. Rebecca reminds Jack how his mother, Marilyn Pearson, always called him on Sunday at 6 pm and also spoke to the Big Three.
Jack arrives at Marilyn’s cousin Debbie’s house. After leaving Jack’s father and her abusive husband, a young Jack drops his mother at Debbie’s place. On visiting Ohio, Jack learns how little he knows about his mother, with whom he spent his entire childhood. Jack’s father hated cats, but Marilyn got herself a cat here. She also had a boyfriend, Mike.
Jack meets Mike, who fondly talks about Marilyn. Jack again feels like he didn’t really see the new and happy person his mother had become. Later, Jack goes to a bar with Debbie and Mike. They sit with some of Marilyn’s friends and remember her and how fun she was. Jack walks out of the bar as he feels like he doesn’t belong there. There are flashback scenes of Jack’s childhood and the only time his mother met his kids.

This is Us Season 6 Episode 4 also brings back Jack’s abusive father, Stanley Pearson. Jack goes back to Debbie’s house and calls his father. He tells Mr Pearson that Marilyn passed away 3 days ago. Stanley is shocked to hear the news and asks Jack about the funeral. Jack yells at him that he didn’t call to invite him. An angry Jack tells his father not to attend the funeral and says, “My whole life I never really knew her. She had a real life out here, and I never saw it. And now she’s dead, and I missed the whole thing because of you,” But Stanley says that he’ll do whatever he wants to.
For the funeral, Jack has to write a eulogy for his mother. But he doesn’t know what to mention. Jack makes a call to Rebecca, who comforts him that she’s there for him if he needs any help. At the funeral, Debbie reads a beautiful poem to remember Marilyn. When Jack has to give a speech, he struggles to express his feelings. However, Rebecca and the kids (Kate, Randall and Kevin) surprise him by attending the funeral. Seeing his family together gives the Jack courage to say what he exactly wants to say.
In his speech, Jack remembers how his life was, how he got out and what a big role his mother played in his life. He ends the speech by saying, “Ok Ma, don’t let me keep you”. Later, Jack is making tomato soup and hot dogs for his kids at his house. He remembers how his mother once reminded Jack that he loved the dish as a kid. During this moment, it hits Jack that his mother is no more. He cries to Rebecca and says, “I don’t have a mom anymore.”

This is Us Season 6 Episode 4 Recap: Final Thoughts
The new episode will emotionally wreck you. It not only shows you the pain of losing your loving parent, but also what it takes to break the toxic chain of an abusive family. When Jack was giving the speech for his mother, I realised that he had an emotionally/physically abusive father who never showed any affection or love. But Jack decided to break that toxic cycle for Pearsons and chose love.
Today, Pearsons are all about love, life and togetherness. No one feels weird to cry or express their happiness, pain, heartbreak, anger or sadness. It is because one Pearson decided not to carry forward the negative chain. When Jack breaks down about losing his mother, the scenes wreck you in ways you never imagined. Even if you haven’t lost any parent, it aches you. The episode had lots of emotions and depth. Milo Ventimiglia did an impeccable job throughout.
The episode is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
