Concluding its neo-noir run on October 25, 2023, the Disney+ K-drama (최악의 악), starring Ji Chang-wook as Park Jun-mo, Wi Ha-joon as Jung Gi-cheul, Im Se-mi as Yoo Eui-jeong and Bibi as Lee Hae-ryeon, has welcomed endless streams of The Worst of Evil finale reactions, with fans of the actors and the show crying rivers due to the inevitable heartbreak incurred by them all. The crime drama series had a total of 12 episodes, with the last three ones releasing on the same day, directed by Han Dong-wook with Jang Min-suk writing the screenplay.
Commencing its journey on the streamer in September, the South Korean thriller series instantly picked up a lot of traction owing to the star-studded inclusion of its main cast members. Set in the 1990s, the show blazed with action-packed and gritty sequences, with each episode peeling down the several layers of these hardened characters. Leading by Jun-mo’s example, a senior patrol officer who’s enlisted to infiltrate a gangster organisation, the show quickly delved into complex characterisations and penned down a grey narrative for every other character we met along the way.
With Ha-joon’s Gi-cheul leading the criminal mob in question, Jun-mo is left with no choice but to go undercover as Kwon Seung-ho, in his attempts to break the organisation from within. He develops a hardcore dynamic with Gi-cheul over the time, and yet again, the pair makes for a heart-rending bromance that ends on a tragic note in the final outing, i.e. The Worst of Evil Episode 12.
Some romantic sub-plots and other correlating personal relationships from both the present and the past convolute the pre-existing platter of complication with the involvement of women characters Eui-jeong and Hae-ryeon. Regardless of that, the finale has especially broken the hearts of the show’s fans because it ultimately pulled the plug on Wi Ha-joon and Ji Chang-wook’s characters’ friendship, even if it was built on a fake premise to begin with. The ending comes full circle and deals out bittersweet conclusions to all the characters involved, all of it weighing heavily on the bitter end of the scale with barely anything sweet to savour.

Nevertheless, the fans have claimed the overall ride into this drama series as sweet itself, with many of them referring to numerous moments from the finale as representatives of “peak cinema” instances. After all the betrayals and heartbreaks, the series has still reeled out an unforgettable experience while going to extreme lengths of brutally conveying the final result. Ha-joon and Chang-wook’s ‘aesthetic walk’ will go down in the history of most iconic K-drama walks, but the ultimate question still stands – Will Wi Ha-joon ever play a character who’ll be dealt out a happy ending in an action-driven thriller series?
