What happened in Kattiyal?

the village ending explained

The downfall of the village of Kattiyal is based on the village’s influential resident Sairaj’s greed and the owner of Exogenyx, GSR’s quest to find a cure to make his son, Prakash, regain the ability to walk. After a fight with his workers, Sairaj tries to one-up them and show them their place and sells the factory and lands to Exogenyx, who creates a lab there and starts conducting dangerous experiments. As with such situations, they, of course, dump harmful chemicals and dead rats into the waters, which pollute and land and cause horrible reactions among the residents. Sairaj and his followers become a victim of this and are left looking deformed.

The villagers try to shut the operation, but just as they are about to confront GSR, the 2004 tsunami devastates the village, and the villagers are forced to take refuge in the lab. After starving for days, they start to eat the infected specimens, resulting in them turning into mutated monsters who are unable to leave the mine/cave because they have a negative reaction to sunlight.

What happened in the first sequence? Who is Mala?

The displaced workers thrive in a neighbouring village, bringing up the ire of Sairaj and his gang, who take their revenge by killing Shakthivel (Sairaj’s son) and Karunagam’s families as they are on their way to deliver Mala’s (Shakthivel’s daughter) baby. Sairaj, having lost his mind to the mutation and greed, uses Mala to have “superior” children, and it is later revealed that he has been keeping his granddaughter hostage inside the cave for all of these years in a deplorable condition.

Why does Prakash want the specimens from Kattiyal?

Prakash’s father has been trying to find a way to make him walk since Prakash has been stuck in a wheelchair for years. Unable to take this, he sends mercenaries to Kattiyal to retrieve everything, but the latter come across the mutants and lose a lot of colleagues. In the end, however, Prakash is able to retrieve everything from the mines and take them home.

What does the last sequence signify?

In the last sequence, we see Farhan telling Gautham to keep an eye on his daughter Maya. It is revealed that Maya came in contact with the dangerous chemicals while in the lab and that it might have bonded with her. When Hectic bites her, the wound immediately heals, proving that her DNA also might be mutating and might just become a danger for her and her family in the future.
