The Staircase: Who is Juliette Binoche’s Sophie? How is She Related to Michael Peterson?

The last episode of The Staircase left everyone hanging with a lot of questions, one of them being ‘what is justice?’. Well, the episode put forward one character, who has been with us since the start, in the limelight and, she was one quintessential figure to put forward the questions of the jury, justice, fate and freedom for the audiences. If you think we are talking about the silver-haired enigma Sophie, then you are absolutely right!

We first met Sophie in the first episode. In fact, she looks like the only person/character in the present timeline who is with Micheal Peterson as there has been no indication if the other Petersons are in touch with their father or not. But, it wasn’t until Sophie was put in front of Jean’s camera for an interview that we quite get to under who this mysterious woman was.

The Staircase: Who is Sophie?

The character of Sophie Brunet is played by Juliette Binoche. In the fourth episode, the identity of Sophie comes to light. We see that Sophie is, in fact, related to the true-crime documentary on which the HBO Max series is based. She served as an editor on the original 2004 documentary about the case.

The Staircase: How Are Micheal and Sophie Related?

By the end of The Staircase Episode 4, we see Sophie writing a letter to Micheal as he is behind the bars, turns out there had been very many letters the two exchanged as she worked on the documentary and, Michael made his rounds of prisons and courts.

The two started seeing each other and, were a couple for 12 years. In 2019, however, the couple called it quits as Michael was too old to move with Sophie to French and start a new life and, it wasn’t possible for Sophie to move to a different place for Michael either as they both wanted to be closer to their respective families.
