The Snow Girl Review

The plot of The Snow Girl revolves around a 5-year-old Amaya who goes missing from the Magi Parade in Malaga. Amaya is at the parade with her parents, who lose contact with her for a few minutes. Two people investigate the missing case – inspector Belen Millan and journalist Miren Rojo. The search for answers goes on for 9 years with twists and turns we don’t see coming.

Netflix’s new Spanish crime series has a non-linear format and LOTS of time jumps. We are shown the events from the years 2010, 2016 and 2019. Miren received 2 videotapes in 2016 and 2019, in which the kidnapper showed some footage of grown-up Amaya. That’s the only big clue the investigators have in their hands. With time, the fear and concern about what must have happened to Amaya keep getting intense.

The Snow Girl on Netflix isn’t entirely an extraordinary tale. But Miren and Belen’s different approaches towards the case make it a solid watch. The show is consistent in its distressing tonality and unexpected twists.

The crime drama becomes a trigger watch with the subplot of Miren’s past. She had been through horrific experiences before she became a journalist. Hence, she is profoundly dedicated and worried for Amaya much more than others.

The series also has certain flaws. I’ve seen a lot of Spanish shows in the past 3 years. One common observation I’ve made in most of them is how they overdo certain things. In The Show Girl, too, the makers have overdone the number of time jumps and the premise of Miren’s past.

Even after establishing the point about why Miren is determined to find answers, the makers keep dragging the flashback scenes till the later episodes. At one point, it just appears as the fillers to give the series a longer runtime.

Milena Smith, as Miren Rojo, has done a commendable job. Her character isn’t much of a talker, breaking the stereotypical portrayal of journalists in many movies and shows. She isn’t always the ray of hope we look for in such dark stories. Aixa Villagran’s cop character Belén Millán is an apt contrast to show how two people act differently towards the same situation. However, in the last 3 episodes, Belén appears as a forgetful side character.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Spanish series is a disturbing crime drama where we see no hope for the characters till the end. But the mystery and unpredictability keep you on the end of your seat. It is for the viewers who are okay with binging on unsettling dramas. The time jumps are annoying at times.

The series is now streaming on Netflix.
