The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3 Review: This Is Boring

This season might not be what everyone expected it to be. The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3 was another in a line of disappointments from the show. Let’s find out why in this review!

The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3 Overview

The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3 Title

The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 or Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 2 is an action, adventure, drama, fantasy, and most importantly, isekai anime that serves as the sequel to its highly acclaimed and fan favourite Season 1 that aired in 2019. The series is based upon a light novel written by Yusagi Aneko and illustrated by Minami Seira. You can read our review of the previous episode of the show right here.

The show’s second season is being adapted into anime by Studio Kinema Citrus, the same studio behind the show’s first season, and other highly acclaimed anime such as Made in Abyss and Barakamon. This season is directed by Masato Jinbo, an industry veteran who also directed shows such as Chaos Child and Restaurant to Another World. This episode of the show is also referred to as Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 2 Episode 3.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3 Review- This Isn’t Very Good

Shield Hero Party The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3

The first season of Shield Hero came as a breath of fresh air on the anime landscape at the time. It was this show that put an end to the multitudes of low effort and barely watchable fantasy and isekai shows and gave us something deeper and more substantial to enjoy. There were real emotions and consequences to actions and good plotlines for us to chew upon and swallow. The action was fantastic, and the paths the show took to get to that even more so.

However, the second season is the opposite of everything season 1 was about. Gone are the plausible storylines and relatable yet fantastical characters. The show has become Just Another Isekai™ and stands among several others as fit for consumption but not good enough to enjoy. Everything special about it has either been forgotten, cast aside, or deemed unnecessary to work on due to its high popularity. Maybe the show really should have ended after its main goal- Naofumi’s revenge got accomplished in the last season.

The current plotline is easily the worst one in the show’s admittedly small catalogue. Since the show’s world is based around a video game that everybody but Naofumi has played, let me explain this one with a video game analogy. The show’s current direction feels like a boring sidequest in a game that you are very close to dropping, mostly because it keeps forcing you to do side-content instead of the interesting material you like. It feels like yet another pointless sequel of the Battlefield or Assassin’s Creed franchises that don’t add anything valuable to the series except milking them for cash.

The spirit turtle is not a particularly interesting opponent for Naofumi to face, especially if he is going to be animated as terribly as he was in Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3. He’s a stationary yet dangerous target, not exactly making for the most exciting television. The humans who are fighting it and sacrificing their lives also feel like fodder to the viewer, and the show doesn’t do a better job at making their lives worth something. The events feel weightless and flow without an issue as if it is almost too easy to predict what exactly is going to happen at any given moment.

Tate no Yuusha Season 2 Episode 3 also dealt with all the new characters bought into the fold for this season, and none of them are very good. Ost is a confusing and ill-fitting character whose existence makes as little sense as anything else in this wretched season. Eclair and the other feudal lords came out to assert their dominance out of nowhere and are as boring as they come. Filo and Raphtalia have also seen their roles reduced in favour of a more diverse and a hundred times more bring cast. Boring- that’s the keyword for this season. It is supremely boring and needs to do much better.

Verdict

The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 Episode 3 was a formulaic and uninteresting episode that kept the show's non-momentum going for another outing. Are we sure we are watching the same show?

    • Wasn’t the whole point of the show that the other three heroes had already played the game the show was based on? There are levelling zones and exp points, and a power system. How is it not based on a game? If you’re going to comment, do it correctly.

  1. If the anime follows the LN arc then it should lead to a story line that will be more appealing to fans of the first season.

  2. There was never a game it was based on the main character got transported after opening a book and the other three were killed in the real world before being transported.

    • There might not be a game in Hajime’s world, but there very much was in the realms of the other heroes. I’d recommend you watch episode 1 of the show again.
