The Lost Lotteries Review: Absurdly Hilarious Thai Comedy

The Lost Lotteries on Netflix stars Kanaphan Puitrakul, Wongravee Nateetorn, Phantira Pipityakorn, Somyos Matures, Gee Sutthirak Subvijitra, Padung Songsang, Somjit Jongjohor, Torpong Kul-On and Suleeporn ‘Napapa’ Tantragul. Directed by Prueksa Amaruji, the story is by Ekachai Uekrongtham and Prueksa. The film is of 90 minutes approx and has English subtitles.

The synopsis reads, “Five down-on-their-luck strangers must band together to steal back winning lottery tickets worth millions from a wicked mafia boss.”

In The Lost Lotteries, we meet Tay ( Wongravee Nateetorn), a guy in his early 20s, living with his mother. Tay and his mother had a very tough life, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying every moment. After his father leaves his pregnant mother, she sells lottery tickets for survival. After his mother’s accident, Tay takes over the ticket business.

One day, Tay’s mother tells him to save several lottery tickets as they might be lucky. However, some goons come and threaten Tay and his mom and take away all the tickets. It turns out the lottery tickets were indeed going to change their life. Tay and his friends come together to fight the goons and take the lost tickets back. Will they succeed in their mission? We find out everything in the end.

If I have to describe The Lost Lotteries in a few words, I will call it ridiculous, silly and also funny. The opening sequence til the 15 mins in the story left me in splits. The plot becomes weird when the tickets are lost, and Tay and his friends start planning how to execute their mission.

The comedy peaks when they plan their mission and execute them. Of course, Tay’s luck has been unfortunate since childhood. So the chances of his plan becoming successful are less. But that’s what packs in lots of funny sequences. In one movie, we see some gangster drama, wrestling scenes and also seduction. Tay and his group often act like superheroes on a mission to save the world. But here, the world is the tickets.

Despite The Lost Lotteries having enough comedy, it sometimes goes overboard. Some scenes are bizarre, affecting the main plot. After some random scenes, things start to come together in the end. But the ending is not the typical one you expect. It’s weird and decent.

The star of the movie is actor Wongravee Nateetorn as Tay. He carries the movie on his shoulder very well. The actor has incredible comic timing. The rest of the cast also plays their part well and makes you laugh with their comedy scenes.
