The Later Daters Review: Surprisingly Entertaining

In this Netflix dating variety show, six baby boomers who have not had the best luck with love, decide to go on blind dates in order to find their one true love. Helping them is Harvard-trained behavioural scientist Logan Ury, who helps them to learn not only the social etiquette of dating but also to be a better person to themselves along others.

The series has 8 episodes, each with a runtime of around 45 minutes and is executive-produced by Michelle Obama.

The Later Daters Review

For those of us who have been drowning recently under the sheer weight of Love is Blind or Too Hot to Handle, streaming giant Netflix has brought something to the table for us which might just stand out a little bit from the usual barrage of horny 20-something adults who can’t think of anything other than sex or are just a walking set of red flags.

The Later Daters is a show about a bunch of older adults who are getting back into the dating game by going on blind dates and experiencing the joys of dating once more while letting behavioural scientist Logan Ury guide them through the journey of self-discovery. The series has many interesting facets and leaves us to explore the pros and cons of these singles, giving us rich character studies to mull over.

It’s interesting and feels like a breath of fresh air, to be honest, because there are some genuine questions asked, some awkwardness brought forth and some good and bad things happen that feel relatable. I don’t really remember the last time I found myself relating to a Netflix dating show in any way, but this one has its moments. It’s also even sweet sometimes because these people feel real and don’t feel like they are just social media influencers who are trying to make a quick buck. Unlike every other show out there these days, that’s a surprising turnaround.

I think I also want to point out here that the participants also look like real people with all their “flaws” and it’s so refreshing to see real people with real bodies that people watching from the comforts of their home can relate to. These days, everything on the internet is so made up that nothing feels genuine, but this one differentiates itself from the rest of the bunch and gives us something that most will enjoy as light-hearted entertainment.

I will also say that Logan Ury and her advice to the participants surrounding dating and their own problems feel approachable and realistic. There was no conversation that felt extreme and although there was some discussion surrounding sex, it wasn’t overwhelming. The relationship between the participants and their children was also a highlight and will bring a smile to your face more often than not. Yes, there are some moments that might get on your nerves, but I think that’s a given because we are dealing with people.

Final Thoughts

The Later Daters is a surprisingly watchable entry in the dating show genre that will make you smile. Whether it be the realistic depiction of the participants, the somewhat approachable conversations and the general laid-back nature of the show, this one can definitely be on your watch list this weekend.
