The Last of Us Season 2 Ending Explained
The last episode of The Last of Us Season 2 ends on a shocking cliffhanger that leaves us questioning everything. Ellie, Dina, Jesse and Tommy find themselves packing up in the theatre, ready to go back home, after the traumatic turn of events at the aquarium. But Ellie has caused irreparable damage, the extent of which she is unable to understand at the time.
What Leaves Ellie Traumatised?
Desperate to find Abby, Ellie learns about her location from Nora after scouring the different parts of Seattle for her. Forced to be in the middle of a deadly battle between the Seraphites and the WLF, Ellie realises that the whale that Nora had mentioned was drawn on an aquarium’s walls. Realising that Abby must be there, she makes her way against turbulent waters. However, there, she comes across Owen and Mel instead of Abby.
She asks them to point out where Abby is on a map, and Owen instead reaches for his gun. Ellie shoots on instinct, killing Owen and accidentally nicking Mel fatally on the neck. As she bleeds out, she reveals that she is heavily pregnant and implores Ellie to get her baby out. A desperate Ellie tries to help her, but Mel is unable to tell her how to operate, resulting in both of them dying in her arms.

Ellie is left heartbroken because this was never her intention. She genuinely would’ve let them go if they had just told her where Abby was, but instead, now she has two people’s blood on her hands. Plus, there’s an unborn baby in the mix as well.
Why Does Abby Come Back For Ellie?
Learning about her friends’ deaths, Abby is left heartbroken and angry and decides to get revenge. Although she is unaware that it’s Ellie at first, one look at her leaves her stumped. She mentions how she let Ellie live and is left in disbelief that this is how she would pay her back for her generosity. Ellie pleads with Abby to let Tommy go after Jesse is viciously shot to death, and she mentions that she is the one who killed her friends. However, before listening to any pleading, a shot rings out. We are unsure whether or not Abby killed Ellie, but she might’ve killed Tommy to give her a piece of her own medicine.

Who Dies at the End of The Last of Us Season 2 Finale?
Jesse is definitely dead. But between Ellie, Abby and Tommy, we are unsure who is alive. Let’s not forget that Dina is in the theatre too, and it is possible that she was not discovered. Could she have pulled the trigger on Abby after hearing all the commotion? It’s entirely possible. But we won’t be able to know all this until the next season.
Where is Ellie and Dina’s Relationship Left Off?

At the end of The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7, Dina is left betrayed after learning about why Abby wanted revenge on Joel. Although they are now solidly a couple, things become a bit frosty between the two. However, she does give Ellie her bracelet for good luck when they go to find Tommy, signalling that although they are in a domestic dispute, they will be alright.
The Last of Us Season 3 Predictions: What Does the Season 2 Ending Mean For the Upcoming Season?

The last scene indicates that we will get to see Abby’s point of view from the day Ellie and Dina came to Seattle, and see a breakdown of her relationship with Isaac. In the last episode, Isaac tells Elise that Abby will be the one to head the WLF if they die, but he is unable to find her, so we will explore that side of Abby’s life as well. We didn’t see her point of view surrounding this entire situation at first, so that will definitely be a point of conversation in the third season.
