– The King’s Affection episode 16 recap contains major spoilers –
The King’s Affection episode 16 starts with what we saw in the last episode – with Ji-un and Yi-hwi kissing each other! A great start to an episode, isn’t it? After that, Ji-un finds something called “Diaries of the Royal Secretariat Months 7 and 8” and in it, there’s something that shocks him to the core – that the late king was poisoned but not with what, and by whom, everyone knows. He rushes off after learning this.
That night, in The King’s Affection episode 16, Hyeon-seol tries to find ledgers related to weapons transactions and thus tells Yi-hwi that he is going to search the base in Yeoyeon. Although she tells him that it’s too dangerous for him to go, he is adamant about his choice. He asks her to send Ga-on if she needs to reach him urgently.
Meanwhile, Ji-un tries to find out about Busohwa, the drug that had seemingly poisoned Hyejong. He figures out that its effects take place immediately and not days late, which happened with the late king. At the same time, Seok-jo catches Yi-hwi sneaking off after meeting Hyeong-seol. He follows suit and daydreams about killing her before Ji-un breaks him out of his dream.
The next morning, Ki-jae firstly asks Seok-jo to get Ji-un and So-eun married to form political alliances and secondly tells him to go to Yeoyeon and bring back the ledgers that can prove the existence of the private army. Seok-jo agrees to both these points, in The King’s Affection episode 16, but it gets him thinking.
The next morning, in The King’s Affection episode 16, Ji-un seems distracted in court. After the morning’s work is over, Yi-hwi asks him where his mind is at and he tells her that he is just tired. After he bids her farewell to go to Seungjeongwon, Ha-gyeong calls him to her quarters, most probably to get him and So-eun together.
Yi-hwi, who saw all this, seems very jealous and Bok-dong volunteers to go to Ha-gyeong’s quarters and observe everything. He tells her that he knows the kiss that she and Ji-un shared the other night and promises to not tell Lady Kim anything. As Yi-hwi is left a bit puzzled, Bok-dong rushes off to serve as the eyes and ears for him.
At Ha-gyeong’s quarters, as the three are awkwardly conversing, Bok-dong comes in with refreshments from Yi-hwi and Ji-un realises that he’s there to be a spy. In a hilarious moment, Ji-un starts coughing when Ha-gyeong asks him why he hasn’t married yet and Bok-dong’s death glare does not help. Anyway, Bok-dong rushes off to Yi-hwi and tells her that she has nothing to worry about.
At The Queens’ quarters, Ha-gyeong does everything in her power to get So-eun and Ji-un together, including leaving them alone together. When that happens, the two chitchat for a moment before he gets up to leave after So-eun tells him that she will talk to Ha-gyeong. Yi-hwi is quite jealous of his chit chat though and Ji-un teases her for it, however, both are quite happy with the turn of events. The fun and laughter are cut short when Seok-jo comes over to ask for Yi-hwi’s permission to go to Prince Jehyeon’s place in Ganghwa, making her suspicious.
Ji-un, meanwhile, meets up with Jil-guem and asks him to get more information about Busohwa. On the other hand, Prince Wonsan finds Yi-hwi’s and her brother’s umbilical cords in a container and realises that Yi-hwi, in fact, wasn’t the only baby born that night. On the other hand, in The King’s Affection episode 16, Seok-jo’s sudden trip to Ganghwa makes Yi-hwi suspicious and she asks Bok-dong to write to Ga-on and put a hold on the plans on Yeoyeon.
In a twist of fate, Prince Changun is still alive and is with Prince Wonsan, which is absolutely annoying. Meanwhile, as Ga-on goes to warn Hyeong-seol to postpone his trip, he gets to know that he has already left, which makes him extremely concerned. Hyeong-seol is already in Yeoyeon and has found the ledger but, unfortunately, he comes across Seok-jo which results in an intense sword fight. Just as Seok-jo is about to kill him, Ga-on comes to his rescue. The pair escape into the woods, in The King’s Affection episode 16, and Hyeong-seol sacrifices himself to save Ga-on and keep the ledger from Seok-jo. As Hyeong-seol dies, Seok-jo thinks back to their friendship and cries over his friend.
That night, Ji-un rushes to tell Yi-hwi that Hyejong was poisoned with Sonangcho and everything in the post mortem report was fabricated. He asks her to investigate the entire thing to find out the truth. Just as she is absorbing this news, she is called to meet Ga-on, who looks bloodied and dishevelled. He hands her the ledger and tells her that Hyeong-seol is dead. They attend a small funeral the next day to pay their respects to him.
Prince Wonsan meets Jaeun later and discusses the former’s life in the countryside, in The King’s Affection episode 16. He mentions that there might be a chance for him to come back to the palace earlier than expected, which gets Jaeun concerned. Meanwhile, as Ji-un and Yi-hwi are coming back to the palace after paying their respects, Changun is lurking in the tall grass – he, too, now knows that Yi-hwi was a twin. The two also figure out that Yi-hwi was a woman. Changun, in the present, is thus trying to prove the same.
In a shocking swordfight where Changun tries to disrobe Yi-hwi to prove a point, Ji-un jumps in front of her and is almost stabbed when Seok-jo jumps in from nowhere and stops Changun from hurting Yi-hwi and his son.
Yi-hwi asks Jaeun to stay her cousin and good friend and to not distance himself from her.
Final Thoughts: The King’s Affection episode 16
The King’s Affection episode 16 is kind of a mixed bag, but there are some really interesting and emotional moments. However, this episode has a lot of fluff that you can skip through and save some time. But, Changun’s entry into the series and immediately trying to take Yi-hwi’s clothes off and Hyeong-seol’s death and Seok-jo’s emotional goodbye are some good moments that will stay with you. There’s going to be some gossip spreading in the next episode though, so let’s hope that one’s tighter!
