The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn As A Typical Nobody Review – The Demon King And Academy of Magic

Ard, Ireena and family

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Episode 2 tried to do much better than its predecessor episode, but failed to do so. We start too suddenly from the scene where Ard and Ireena are talking to the Headmaster of the Academy of Magic they wanted to attend. Where are the discussion and the conclusion about deciding that? Why did they even attend such a prestigious school if Ard’s primary goal in the first place was to make friends? This episode starts riddled with plotholes.

Things ended up pretty shaky in the previous episode. From ignorant parents to unexplainable and unreasonable actions by our main character, we thought we would see some character development in this episode. But we just faced disappointment.

One would expect Ard to be serious about his goal to make friends- after all, he left his status as the greatest demon lord in all of history who reigned for several millennia as absolute ruler. Not only that, he chose to be reincarnated as a normal human. But as he is joining the Academy, he is a teenager, and his only friend is Ireena? And let’s be honest, that was also because of their parents being close friends. What are you doing, Demon Lord?

Shijou Saikyou no Daimaou Murabito A ni Tensei suru seems to not be able to build its plot. Throughout the first episode, we get the idea that Ard is born as a normal boy to normal parents. Even the title “The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody” says so. But all of a sudden, it is revealed by the Academy Headmaster that Ard’s parents were historic heroes who protected their kingdom 10 years ago. Not only that but Ireena was also aware of it. Why did Ard not know this about his parents?

The setup of the anime is quite poor. Common sense dictates that Ard could have not possibly not known about his parents. Did Ireena and Ard never talk despite being represented as each other’s only friends for years? How did Ard not sense anything that can be perceived as not “Typical” about his parents despite living with them all those years?

None of this makes sense. But the anime just rashly proceeds to the entrance exams. Ard is shown determined to pass the exams for a second. We expect what would normally follow in this case is a heartfelt introduction of some of the potential future classmates and bullies. But again, it skips to results. Such hasty progress diminished any hope I had to see character growth. With the plot crumbling with every second passing, I expected to be greeted by some new characters, and well, that’s exactly what happened.

We get introduced to another main character, a succubus. Again, without much context, she faces her bullies and overcomes them. All in less than 15 minutes. Yes, that is it. One of the previous Four Heavenly Kings is a teacher. With Ard being reborn as a random human in a random village in a random era, she meets Ard again. What are the chances of that happening!

The story seems to be all over the place in The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Episode 2. The characters are so poor that it is almost laughable. Ard is teaching lost spells, and almost no one bats an eye. Bullies are going back to bullying 2 minutes after being taught a lesson. I honestly cannot predict any characters’ next course of action and not because of them being clever but because of how disappointing and lamentable their character sketch is.

The animation seemed a big snooze except for some of the times when the magic is being cast. Ordinary character designs in ordinary settings, this is very prevalent throughout the episode. The Academy of Magic seemed to be grand, but again, which Academy, where the main character attends, is not? Nothing much to appreciate here as well. But contrarily, the theme songs and their animations are decent, giving us hope for better future prospects.

Ard and his friends

Verdict

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Episode 2 was a big disappointment. Even the Academy of Magic couldn’t change much. With a below-average cast to an ordinary plot, nothing seemed to catch an eye.
