If we ever come to find out how Jahy came to be the second in command to the dark lord, it probably won’t be because of her competence. Jahy is the complete opposite of what anyone would imagine a faithful servant of the dark lord would act like. I get that that’s the entire point of the show. I’m just making an observation here. It’s never too late to state the obvious if it fits with the overall point you’re trying to make.

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 9 flips the script in terms of Heroes and Villains such that literally everyone watching the show is rooting for the supposed “bad guys.” The magical girl is Jahy’s bane of existence, and Jahy spent the entirety of this episode trying to find ways to defeat her. In any other context, any person in the right mind would choose to side with the magical girl since she is the one trying to get rid of “Darkness and Evil”. Not here, though.

The magical girl’s magic doesn’t work on people like us. People who have already come to know Jahy as a person with a huge heart and persistence. We’ve all seen her helping the bird get to the nest and treating Druj even when she couldn’t afford to. We have seen her cry her eyes out after feeling sad that she lost the only place where people cared about her. In The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 9, we saw her be kind to Saurva when she had no reason to be so.

Jahy and most people she interacts with have a heart of gold, and it feels awful to see anything bad happen to them. The landlord and the boss genuinely care for Jahy, as they once again demonstrated in this episode. Jahy also took the bullet for “a mere human”, as she put it. She can deny it all she wants, but it was because she cared for the landlord and didn’t want to see her hurt for something that was Jahy’s fault.

Saurva is also a great character in her own right. She doesn’t seem to show up much, but her dynamic with Jahy is the one I really like. Some tropes have staying power because they are that good, and I believe the “You destroyed everything I loved” “I don’t even know who you are” is one of them. It is a little similar to the dynamic between the magical girl and Jahy, but Jahy never tries to actively make Saurva’s day worse as the magical girl does to Jahy.

Jahy also discovered the wonders of capitalism this week and lost all her money buying useless stuff from the supermarket. Welcome to Earth, Jahy. Nothing is free here, and you pay more for everything than you realise or are comfortable with. You’ll learn how it works soon enough. Jahy is overdue a win soon in the anime, as she lost the thing she worked very hard for 4 episodes ago and still hasn’t received a lick of vengeance. Let Jahy win, Silver Link!

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 9 Review- Art and Music

A delicate and delightful piano piece plays at some truly sad times in this episode, contributing to the overall sad and helpless feeling of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 9. Jahy-Sama is a show with a very specific tone to it that is 50/50 comedy and sadness. It treads upon that very thin line very carefully. Still, sometimes episodes are sadder or funnier than the rest, which is inevitable in a show that’s going to be running for 20 episodes.

The animation in The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 9 was simple yet deliberate. The show deals with its lack of a huge budget very cleverly, and never once does it look that an episode didn’t take any effort to produce. It is very deliberate with its frames and comic timing, and everything clicks together very well.

Verdict

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 9 was a simple yet effective episode of the show. The episode didn’t do anything spectacular, but it didn’t need to. Sometimes, restraint is what you need to make a show flow well.
