In this reality TV, host Daniel Tosh and 13 contestants from different reality shows come together to be the best reality star out of them all. Winners get to take $200,000 home as well as the title of Greatest Of All Time.

the goat review

Watching Prime Video’s newest reality TV show The Goat feels like a fever dream of sorts, with comedian Daniel Tosh being the smarta*s comments being the highlight. The fact that all of these known faces from other dumpster-fire shows come together to play silly games and win the title of the GOAT… of reality TV stars… feels a little unreal. But, here we are.

The reality TV show, however, has its moments and Tosh is by far the most entertaining part of it. His jokes are self-aware and he knows where he is and jokes as such. The series thankfully doesn’t take itself seriously too much and makes fun of itself enough for us to take a deep breath and try to enjoy it somewhat. Of course, it’s a reality TV show after all so the sighs are few and far between, but it’s still a good time for the most part.

Now listen, this series doesn’t do anything new but it is surprisingly self-aware and that’s what is refreshing about it. But other than that, if you’re expecting something epic to differentiate it from the other silly shows, then you’re gonna be left disappointed. The silly fights, the “plotting” to eliminate, the crying and the “alliances” are all stuff that we have seen a thousand times before, making it a repetitive mess when the host is not around. Plus, apart from a few contestants, most are as good as forgettable.

That, again, is nothing new when it comes to reality TV shows. This one in particular has the most bleh contestants from other messy shows who create little to no impact. For some reason, they didn’t get their hands on the messy ones who would create the most drama and so we are left with lukewarm moments that don’t impact us in any way. However, I must compliment the games that the contestants have to play in order to win a leg up over their fellow participants. Each game is based on a well-known reality show and almost all of them are quite refreshing and entertaining and will make you laugh for the most part.

However, the most entertaining part of reality TV shows these days is the hypocrisy that exists among the competitors. For some reason, everything in these shows is becoming a gendered issue and the moment someone tries to do something according to their own choice they are demonised. In the realm of this show, Da’Vonne Rogers (Big Brother 17 and Big Brother 18) and Jill Zarin (The Real Housewives of New York City) have it out for the men with their female pact or something but the moment CJ Franco (FBoy Island) decides to vote someone she wants out, suddenly everyone starts hurling insults.

The thing is, you gotta pick a side. You either agree that human beings have a right to choose, regardless of whether or not it helps your cause, or that you want people to follow you such that you win in the end. Considering this is a competition where only one person wins the grand prize, having a group of women will eventually lead to infighting in the end. Plus, it’s Rogers who was of the opinion that they are all here to compete and win but suddenly she gets all for the group when it helps her during elimination.

the goat review

It’s a thing that I have seen a lot in the last couple of competitive shows and it’s so gratingly obvious that you can’t help but feel the ick sometimes. The women vs men thing is really icky and gross, regardless of which gendered side does it and it makes for people to get more incensed about gender issues than is required.

The GOAT Review: Final Thoughts

This reality TV is surprisingly funny and although entirely forgettable, brings something new to the table with respect to the genre. The contestants, however, are a different ball game altogether and their hypocritical nature might just make you scratch your head. Considering how bland other shows are, this one will make you laugh on occasion though so there’s that!

The GOAT will stream on Amazon Prime Video from May 09, 2024.
