The Family Man Season 3 Review

We have arrived at the third season of Prime Video’s beloved spy thriller series The Family Man and, in a frustrating twist, we are left on a cliffhanger at the end of its 7-episode runtime. With returning cast members and two fresh directors at the helm, the series brings another expansive and complex story, this time taking place in the northeastern states of India and featuring imminent war with China.

The series balances its different emotional and thriller aspects well, as per usual, showing Srikant’s vulnerable and fierce side in tandem. Srikant is a character who feels lived in and believable, as he struggles with his failing marriage, his children growing up and some shocking situations at work that force him to question his closest colleagues. Thus, when he loses a confidant, things go off the rails as he takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of the betrayal.

The stakes are personal, and the new characters are interesting. Jaideep Ahlawat joins the season as antagonist Rukma and is fierce, but also with a surprisingly vulnerable side. While we are used to Srikant’s light-hearted nature, you don’t expect someone like Rukma to take things as personally as he eventually does, and it gives him a very realistic characteristic that is hard not to want to know more of. We also have Nimrat Kaur as Meera, a fixer who has her finger in almost every pie. I found her character to be generic and underdeveloped, or maybe I have reached my limit for these “fixer” characters who seem to be doing everything and nothing all at once.

Either way, the characters are, as always, the most interesting part of the show, although the storyline is interesting as well. Focusing on a huge conspiracy spanning different continents, it makes us question how everything is connected and the scale at which these corruptions exist. The different threads tie together well, although I was more interested in the smaller politics and problems, which felt more complex and engaging. I think it had to do with believing in the people associated with the issue at hand, and, to be honest, Stephen’s storyline and struggles have much more heart than just lumping every problem with greed.

Professional life aside, Srikant’s personal life, too, is going through some big ups and downs. Things aren’t good between him and Suchitra, and the kids, too, feel that vibe. Navigating this delicate and complex issue while trying to save themselves from enemies who won’t think twice before killing them makes us root for the characters and wait with bated breath, hoping for everyone to be safe. It adds another layer of tension to an already tense situation.

In the end, the major disappointment came in the form of a cliffhanger ending, which was not just unnecessary but also unwarranted. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that the interest that I felt before that was immediately wiped out. I couldn’t understand why we couldn’t just get the story over with in one season and now have to wait for however many months to get the conclusion. The Family Man is a series that most people enjoy and look forward to watching, so I think this need to hype about the ending was completely unnecessary.

The Family Man Season 3 gets off on the right foot and is quite engaging, although it can get a bit far-fetched at times. However, it’s the fact that it’s dragging the story over multiple seasons is what is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
