The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea’s Tragedies Review
This harrowing Netflix documentary is back again after giving viewers a hard time in 2023 with In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal. The season is, again, absolutely heartbreaking and will leave most viewers on edge as we focus on the survivors of the crimes and their perspectives instead of giving the perpetrators too much attention. Thus, the season feels more personal than the previous ones.
Of course, it’s still completely unfair and angering, more so because these are people whom the common folk had trusted with their hearts and souls. The betrayal, thus, feels more personal, and it stings. Focusing on the ordeal of the victims alone instead of the other way around, the series is shocking more so because the situations themselves are absolutely mind-boggling.

I think that the best part about a documentary is hearing a story from those who have faced the situation personally. The second season outdoes the heartbreak and anger that we all felt previously and adds a lot of emotion to the situation, furthering our feelings for everyone involved. You not only feel for the victims but also feel sorrow and strength through the screen as they vividly retell their truths and those of many others. However, I will say that the reenactments are a bit much and feel cheap and forced at times. It doesn’t take away from the raw emotions of the victims, but it’s very cringy.

The sadness and despair on the victims’ faces are things that might haunt some viewers thoroughly. It’s the way the stories come to light that feels like it’s piercing your heart. This time around, the series meticulously exposes the injustices and human rights violations, but with an empathy to it that feels hard to ignore.
Final Thoughts

I won’t say that this series is an enjoyable watch because it is very much traumatising, especially if you choose to dig further into the atrocities mentioned in the series. However, if you’re a true crime fan, this one will truly have your heart in a chokehold.
