The creepy yet adorable vampires are back as we head into The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1. Let’s see where bloodlust takes our heroes this time around in this review!

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1 Overview

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1 Title

The Case Study of Vanitas, or Vanitas no Carte in original Japanese, is a supernatural, historical, and vampire show based upon a manga written by Jun Mochizuki. It follows the human-vampire duo of Vanitas and Noe as they try to find out the perpetrator behind the recent impurity in the vampires’ hearts. This episode is also referred to as Vanitas no Carte Season 2 Episode 1, The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2 Episode 1, and Vanitas no Carte Part 2 Episode 1.

This season of Vanitas is being brought to the medium of anime by Studio Bones, a giant behind classic anime shows such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and My Hero Academia. The season is being directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, who also directed part 1 of the show, alongside several shows of the Monogatari series.

vanitas Fighting The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1

The first season of Vanitas was a sleeper hit in 2021, as it gained viewers due to its quality despite not having the strongest start. Now, the series has an eager core audience waiting for the latest part with bated breath and stifled excitement. The showrunners obliged, as the time between the two seasons barely even amounts to 4 months. That’s a remarkable turnaround, even if it is technically Vanitas Season 1 part 2, not a season two.

Catching this one as it airs this time around means that we miss out on the excellent dub of the show, which I would highly recommend you seek out even if you’ve already seen the first season with subtitles. It is a remarkably faithful and well-written dub, which I’m sure will be replicated for Season 2 of the show. Alas, this isn’t a simulcast. All we have is the Japanese audio with English subtitles, but that isn’t anything new for anime fans.

Astolfo The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1 was a lot of the same stuff we saw in part 1, so you’ll probably love it if you liked the first season. There is a lot of comedy that works very well, and the new direction for the show feels fresh and vast after the tight spaces of the first season. Paris is a lovely city, and seeing it be animated in such a competent manner was a treat to the eyes, but you can only watch the same locales for so long. A countryside location is much appreciated.

The chemistry of Vanitas and Noe is still astounding, and they are both well-written characters which remains the case in this new series. Vanitas is very much still a mystery by this point, but it feels like this season will go more into why he is what he is. He is the best character and asset of the show by far, and there is a lot of anticipation for his backstory. If Noe’s flashback is anything to go by, we can rest assured that the show will do it justice. There are a few new characters, including Astolfo, who seems to be just the right amount of crazy right now.

Now, Part 1 of Vanitas wasn’t exactly perfect by any means. The biggest problem with it was the splintered direction and tone the show had. The balance between the drama and comedy elements of the show was off, and the series felt like it stalled for time a lot and ruined its pacing because of it. Add that to a jumping narrative full of dozens of characters, and you get a hell of a confusing show. Hopefully, Season 2’s monster hunting and sister searching are a little better with that.

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1 retains the fantastic animation and sound quality, and the show looks and sounds fantastic. There are new opening and ending themes, and they are a mixed bag. While the opening is fantastic and better than the original, the ending seems to be a lot worse than the brilliant first one. Hopefully, they will grow on people with time. A good return by the show might also signal a great season, but we’ll have to wait and watch for that.

Verdict

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 1 was a great return for the show and exactly as good as the first season. The new locations, characters, and motivations seem decent and promise good things for the future.
