The Bads of Bollywood Review

If meta shows are your thing and going overboard in a series is your cup of tea, then Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Bads of Bollywood, is quite the entertaining watch for anyone who loves something that is equal parts nonsensical and thrilling. Following a young newcomer trying to make it big in the industry, the series showcases the murky underbelly of Bollywood and how people have no problems giving up their morals in a very self-aware manner.

However, I think the best part of the series is how hilariously unhinged it is, going from extreme to more extreme in every episode. The series highlights and brings forth some of the most memorable moments in Bollywood in the last few years, leaving us cackling as Aasmaan delivers one “hit” dialogue after another, and viewers won’t be able to stop themselves from pressing the next episode button because it’s a classic masala show with some of the most well-known faces in the industry.

As if Om Shanti Om didn’t get guest appearances right, The Ba***ds of Bollywood wows us with many well-known faces who deliver some quirky lines and crazy situations before taking a bow. Supporting cast Rajat Bedi, however, is the most hilarious of the lot and left me laughing whenever he came on-screen. If you are interested in watching the show to spot your favourite actors, I think you will be thoroughly amused at star spotting, if nothing else.

But, then again, I think the series does a good job with the storytelling as well. It’s completely unhinged, sometimes doesn’t make sense and is completely over the top, but one can’t deny it’s just so entertaining. That’s probably mostly because Deol and Lakshya are both so good in their roles, along with Raghav Juyal, who is delightful as ever. Juyal and Lakshya’s last film, Kill, was one of my most favourite watches from 2023, and the Netflix series is equally entertaining in many ways.

Listen, is this the best thing on TV with a social impact? Not really. But it’s definitely for anyone who needs to watch something light, action-packed and easily digestible without getting too deep into any other complications. The narrative is fast-paced, there’s a ton happening constantly, and it keeps things moving with the most ridiculous stunts, and I found myself invested. The ins and outs of Bollywood are nothing new at this point, but it’s brought to us comically, such that it’s hard not to be entertained.

I think The Ba***ds of Bollywood is for anyone who wants to watch something light-hearted, action-packed and teeming with stars. It’s funny and has some insane moments that will make you do a double-take. This one is, I guess, for all the masala lovers who want something fun and forgettable.
